chaps, any of you with the very good Aisin 6 speed auto? quite few I think..
mine has always made a high pitched whine, only ever in 6th under load... I know this isn't right.. I don't know exactly how I will fix whatever it is, when it finally goes wrong..
I cant say I have ever looked much inside an auto box, let alone a modern one? Could I be right in thinking something like a clutch pack just for 6th gear has an output bearing issue? Jim??

Re: Aisin owners
Not sure if 6th is an overdrive or direct-drive (1:1 ratio) but if it's the former then I would suggest it may be some part of the 6th gear assembly itself, or it's clutch as you mentioned.
Would be interesting to have a look inside one of these at some point, these modern autos/semi autos/piloted manuals hold quite a bit of interest for me as they're something away from the 'norm' and many seem to be repaired by replacing huge amounts of expensive parts or just the whole 'box and I think there's plenty of opportunity for someone so inclined to make a pretty penny by actually servicing and repairing some of them not to mention modifying some weaker areas for longevity.

You can have look inside one here if you can stand the music and the adverts.

Re: Aisin owners
It's a CVT then? ( may have missed something as I couldn't stand said music and skipped a fair lot, but the pics I saw were of a push belt CVT)
If that's the case it won't be 6th gear or it's clutch after all, perhaps a sign of the belt beginning to slip though? Or perhaps the computer is pushing the cones near their limits of travel to make the top gear ratio

Re: Aisin owners
I don't think that video is showing a modern transmission.

Re: Aisin owners
That's what I wondered, it looked rather similar to the CVT unit fitted to my old Suzuki Cultus convertible. That was made by Borg-Warner as I recall and was very prone to early (sub 30k) failure, as well as requiring a very expensive specialist oil.
I actually had quite a lengthy email exchange with one of the guys who worked on the design, in trying to fix my one, but had little success save for being fairly sure it was an oil pressure problem.

Re: Aisin owners
From what I understand the AM6 is a standard torque converter auto box with clutch packs for each gear. I too am intrigued by how exactly it works as I'd quite like to ensure the longevity of my own. I've changed the oil but beyond that I'm not sure if there's anything that can be done?

Re: Aisin owners
The video is showing a few different transmissions but the Aisin box is in there., they are AM6, AF40 and TF80.

Re: Aisin owners
You are right Gibbo
Different names for the same transmission. In my vectra it is known as an AF40-6 but in citroen circles AM6 and by the manufacturer as AWTF80_SC.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AWTF-80_SC
The AW TF60 SN is a different beast, although a 6-speed Transverse Auto Box, fitted mainly to Volkswagens.
