You can't get the motor off without taking the whole pump off, the motor however just has two power wires and a signal wire so no need to disturb the bsi if you're only going to fix the motor.

My first one I had no idea what the set up was, I just took the pump off and pulled the motor, two through screws and a good tug to overcome the magnet drag, the armature is hand tight screwed onto the pump shaft and can be removed by putting a screwdriver through the flexible joint to stop it turning.

The motor on mine had blue copper corrosion on a couple of wires, one of which had been eaten right through, I cut out the bad bit and soldered in a short length, only about 6mm, of copper cooker wire and it was fixed.

Not quite so much luck with the next two, on one the motor was completely f..d and I had to find a second hand one, the next was the oil seal that separates the pump and the motor, motor filled with sludge but I managed to fix that with a new seal from my local bearings and seals shop. (surprised he had one as it's very small)

The first one self bled, the other two needed a bit of a push which was done with a bicycle tyre pump and adapter fastened to a suitable screw on cap, it only needs half a bar (7psi)

All these cars are still running with no further problems.
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.

Well maybe not.
The picture that you've posted, I think shows the motor under the LDS tank.
There's photos on here showing removal of tank with motor underneath, but they are translated from Russian to English, so make no sense.
But if people and eBay are calling that the pump, what the hell's hanging down in the wing that i've just pulled the LDS hoses off?

This diagram is the parts diagram for a 2001 Mark I Diesel (I've already said I'll need your VIN if you want the specific diagram for your car)
C5 MK I BHI.PNG
The LDS reservoir is the tank at the top.

In the following diagram (Part 1 in the diagram above) is the hydraulic suspension unit or the BHI and this consists of the following primary parts:

35 = Electric Motor
36 = Suspension ECU
38 = Hydraulic Unit (exploded underneath)
37 = Electrovalves

Marc, xantia and Gibbo.
Thanks for your info. Have the motor out so its like in the above link photos.
And I'm dissapointed with how clean my motor is. Its dry, no gunge, paste or heavy powder build-up. Its much cleaner than in the above pics.
But, the pump spindle with the flexy joint, it should rotate easily with just one finger?
Or must it be gripped to turn slightly to feeling stiff then slack, stiff and so on.
Does the spindle rotate under a piston or a type of clutch spring is wrapped around it?
Am not sure when viewing the above plan.

pump spindle feels notchy

Post by seanrx »

Suspension pump spindle/shaft. How easy to spin should it be?
The square rubber mount at it's end, just push with one finger to rotate shaft freely?

Or like mine is, grip the end to rotate and feel resistance every quarter turn, as if its pushing on a piston.

Has anyone stripped a pump down?

The motor itself was clean inside for a 13 year old car and nothing burnt out or worn, brushes and braided wire all good.

Ok, so with your VIN, nothing majorly different, but diagram here for correctness:
C5 II BHI.PNG
37 - Electric Motor (2350 +/- 150 rpm
38 - Suspension ECU
39 - Electrovalves

40 - Hydraulic Unit - Flow:- 0.7 litres per minute at 2300 rpm
Pump with 5 axial pistons:- Piston diameter: 6.35 mm
Anti Pulse hydropneumatic accumulator:- relief valve setting: 180 bars
Safety valve

For future reference, the complete replacement BHI is part 5277 28, but these are now being replaced with 5277 A1 (No 1 BHI / Pump) + 5280 T7 (No 4 Centring Stud) + 6981 K7(No 73 Hose Clip) as original stock is no longer available on the following parts diagram:

Thanks for that 2nd plan Marc. I can see now that pump spindle is in contact with pistons.
Am starting a new topic just for spindle.

Ok, from what I can see, the central electronic block motor (7739), should have two, 2-pin black plugs. One of these has 2 wires, the other a single wire.

The 2-wire plug contains the earth (M7740) - the cables are marked if there is enough sheath showing. The other wire is 7740. 7740 is the Left-hand rear body height sensor + power supply, which goes to the relay (1704) - or I should say comes FROM the relay.

The other plug with the single wire, (7780) is the Electric pump unit motor command. This goes to the Suspension control unit.

Does that relay live in the black box on top of the pump or is it in the box on the opposite wing.

The relays are only shown on the diagrams depending on the component sections you are looking at. Service box will only show you the part and location.

I'll have another look generally tomorrow for the relays in the connections section just to make sure.

OK thanks Marc,
as you may recall I have no comm's with suspension ECU and I still haven't figured out what is wrong with my load assist switch in the boot I have checked as much as I know how to, including the 40 amp maxi fuse but I think there is a relay or something amiss because when the load assist died it sounded a bit like the funny nokia broken ring tone :-D . I replaced the buzzer and switch to no avail. :? The reason I think it may be a relay is the manner in which it died like it lost a larger power supply,and possibly retained a low power comms line to fool the ecu to think it still works.
I wonder are relay functions listed in Sedré. actually I will have a look I have the old version :idea: .
