C5 2004 2.0hdi ESP and ABS light staying on

Post by danny_c5 »

Was after some advice around my C5 ESP and ABS light staying on.
Mechanic I use has recently fixed some issues from MOT failure and a second hand starter motor has been put in as the current one was on its way out and died. Since the work has been done car has developed an ESP and ABS lights staying on.
Mechanic who fixed the original problems has been back and looked at the car, front passenger wheel off and he couldn't see any issues and felt the car was ok but said he feels its an electrical problem. He has said brakes are fine and no problem. Last year had front pads, discs and both callipers done, recently had rear pads, discs and rear driver side calliper as the pin failed.
I trust the mechanic who has done the work but he comes to the house to do the work and anything electrical he cant touch or that would appear.
I have tried driving the car above 20KMH and battery's been out and left for an hour before reconnecting.
If anyone can offer any advice I would be grateful.
Car is due to have MOT re test today, its booked in so going to give it a shot and praying that it passes.

Cheers
Danny

Could be that the ABS needs bleeding, it's a secondary system and doesn't bleed in the ordinary way, needs to be bled with the Lexia/Diagbox programme.

It won't pass with the ABS light on.....

Needs to go on Diagbox to see what it is upset about - could be entirely unrelated to the work done.

Not long back from picking her up and she passed, don't know how - was only a re-test and neither lights showed up until work was done, not by the MOT garage.
The guy who done the work said he feels its an electronic fault.

Out of interests got advisories these being, Slight weep on suspension unit near and offside.
My mechanic looked at these also and said its a very slight weep on shock absorbers and he stated I cant believe this was mentioned.

ABS light comes on as soon as ignition is started followed by ESP on the LCD Display.

I don't have a Lexia just a standard snap off code reader from ebay.

Does anyone have any ideas who may have said Lexia and be able to help out, I am based on The Wirral.

I also get the depoultion system faulty and have had this for some time, done the usual of letting it rev on a motorway run no change so more lights and displays that the standard house at Christmas time now greet me when I get in the car.

I did purchase a bottle of Wynn's DPF cleaner which I will put in next time I fill up.

Cheers for all the advice :)

The code reader should pick up the ABS code, and probably tell you why the EML is on - it's not necessarily anything to do with the DPF (if the car even has one - depends on if it's a an 8V 110 or a 16V 138).

Thanks for all the info I appreciate it.

Car is a 2.0hdi VTR 54 plate, vehicle has covered 130k miles

Not sure if that's of any help?

LCD display reads depollution system fault and has done for some time.

Now getting the ABS light on in yellow followed by ESP on the LCD display.

Cheers.

You need to get the fault codes next....shooting in the dark without them. An 04 will be most likely be a MK1(?) with the 110 8v engine, so no DPF.

Danny post up your VIN and we'll be able to ascertain exactly what model / engine and spec you have, just to save a lot of speculation.

:rofl2:

Did he not notice someone had nicked the springs :)

Re: the Wynns. Don't hold your breath - I tried Redex for eight months with absolutely no discernible effect - engine was hunting a bit.
Since discontinuing the additive the engine is now smooth as silk.

Have also tried Forte diesel system treatment with similar lack of results.

No, that's not the VIN. You can find it from the outside bottom of the windscreen, passenger side, 17 alphanumeric sequence beginning VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]....

Sorry for late reply busy weekend.

Right got the VIN number and it is as follows.
VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

Hope this is of use.

Put the Wynn's in and had a good blast to Blackpool and back and haven't noticed any plooms of black smoke as anticipated.

With the braking issue what I have noticed is when the car gets above 5/10 MPH the ESP ASR warning comes on the LCD Display and then the ESP light stays on, until this happens the brakes feel like they are skidding and make a horrible noise once the ESP light comes on feel ok and no issues.

will have to try and get in touch with anyone local with a Lexia and see if they have some time to plug it in and fingers crossed can get to the bottom of the problems.

That's the same as the one I'm fixing up which also has the ABS/ESP light on since I had to take out a calliper piston to free it off and bleed the brakes.

I'm still trying to make my laptop accept the software for Diagbox (struggling, I think the laptop's duff) so can't bleed the ABS with it yet as required according to the factory manual.
