If you don't have the confidential card, the dealer will be able to retrieve this for you (they may well charge a small fee for this) but you will need relevant proof of ownership documents.

Having been in this situation not once, but twice before now is the reason that I have a simple rule that if I get out the car - the key comes with me. The mitigation in my case if I'm working on it is that the driver's window stays open...though that may well not save you on the C5 as I've seen quite a few cars of that era which will close any open windows when the car is locked...

We had this happen several times with various different brands at the garage over the years. It's a rare occurrence in the grand scheme of things, but does happen.

Given the potential for electrical madness in cars as modern as the C5, it's all the more reason never to leave the keys in the car.

One thing which springs to mind...does the C5 have a feature whereby it automatically re-locks the car if it's not opened within a set period? If so, could this have triggered with the car not detecting the driver's door had been opened due to a dodgy door switch or similar?

That system used to drive is mad on the first 207 we had - it took precisely two seconds longer to get to the car from the door of the house than it took the car to decide to lock the doors again...

Yes that feature has been standard on most models since the C5, in case you accidentally hit the Unlock button on the fob when putting it away in a pocket (or a bag).

The windows and sunroof will only self-close with a long press on the lock button of the fob, so a normal single press or 2 quick presses to deadlock won't do it.

SOLVED... With a great deal of care and fiddling for fifteen minutes.
Thank you to 'Xantia V6' for the age old suggestion of a coat hanger in over top of door.
I managed to press the unlock button on the remote!!

Thanks to all - this forum, like many others, is priceless!
Had too many to list, and spend more time looking for the problem than fixing them these days.

great news!

I locked my MG keys in a few weeks ago.. had a spare set but still! had to make a journey to get them!
My current job is taking custody of peoples cars whilst they are on holiday, I am paranoid about locking their keys in! and expensive and stressful mistake. almost every car I drive is keyless ignition, so the key just sits on the passenger seat..

interestingly, virtually every car is auto and diesel too! occasionally I have to drive a manual, and really have to think about it, even though I have one myself.. anyway, drifting off as usual :)

well done

Keyless ignition = key stays in zipper pocket, never gets left in car unless you yourself forget to leave the car :)

Keyless entry cars are very easy to gain entry to if the keys are in the car, just wedge a gap at the top of the door & use a long rod to push the start button, this brings the ignition on & you then use the rod to push one of the window switches & put the window down.

Give me key and a fob any day over those Carlos Fandango keyless systems. Every time I get a courtesy car now, there seems to be one of these systems and I'm forever wondering where to stick the brick sized fob and panicking in case I loose it.
