Hi Elis. They are different depending on whether they are left or right hand drive, and additionally, it will depend on the type of central locking fitted:

There are 2 types of locking depending on trim / Country:
  • Simple Central Locking
  • Central Deadlocking
Additionally, they were also replaced with a different part from 1st March 2010 and again from 1st January 2012.

Good point, I can test whether my new lock mechanism has deadlocking by trying to open it with the key... if it doesn’t open then deadlocking is working, correct?

The UK Right Hand Drive models I think should have Deadlocking. Use the fob - one press to lock second press to deadlock. If you have the window down, deadlock and then try and open door handle from inside - if it doesn't - deadlocked. (but temporarily disable the Ultrasonic sensors first using the button - within 10 seconds of switching ignition off) so you don't upset the neighbours!

Blimey, it's not easy to read the VIN on a dark wet afternoon...

It is, I hope, VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff] :)

The problem for me is I'm locked out of the car with the only key still in the ignition switch. Short of going to a locksmith and getting a key cut from the factory code, is it possible to break into it? it's a 2005 C5 HDI estate.

I think you'll need to speak to a local locksmith - or get a key made up - as to be honest, it's not something we would want to put on a public Forum if there was a way.

As the key is visible your best bet is to wedge the top of the door frame to create a gap & fish the key out using a long rod. If its a remote key (and the car battery is not now flat) if you can hook the key out & onto the seat or floor use a long rod to press the unlock button on the remote.

With a long enough rod you may be able to push the lock button on the dash.

How did you manage to lock the keys inside if you only have one?

My C4 locks itself if the key is left in the ignition. No key in the ignition and it doesn't.

On many modern cars interior electronic lock buttons go dead a few minutes after the car is locked. Cant remember if this is the case with early C5's or not.
If the car is deadlocked then it will definitely be disabled.

That is a clever trick.
If you do get in it may be possible to disable that.

Mine will only lock itself if it has been unlocked but a door or boot not opened.
The two Mk. 1 C5s were the same.

I've all but given up on this problem. Our local dealership wants proof of ownership before they order another key, they say It's a directive from PSA.

This one is a series 2 with the facelift front, I think the battery may have been under 9 volts, I heard the lock activate just as I let go of the door. I bought the car second-hand with only one key, the other one was apparently lost. I don't want to damage the door frame but it looks like I might have to use a wedge to pry open the frame to get the rod in.
