Hi all,

Just found your forum.
Lots of good stuff to read up on!
I've recently bought a Citroen Dispatch 2.0hdi 6 speed manual on 120k.
I was quite desperate at the time and against my good judgement I went for it, even with a rattly engine 🐷
Now what I seem to note having driven it 3k is that it sounds like the cam followers are rattling away between 1500-2000 rpm while go up through the gears.
It does do it at other times too intermittently too.
I've just done the cam belt & full service to see if it's poor oil quality at fault.
But unfortunately it hasn't done the trick.
Any advice for a newbie would be very much appreciated.

It's probably the hydraulic tappets not fully opening, I wonder if the oil pressure to them is low for some reason? Never heard of it but there is always a first time. You could try using engine flush but I'm, only clutching at straws here. It used to be a problem with the 2.1 XUD engine but I think you could change them without taking the head off.

Rattly tappets on an engine with hydraulic lifters is almost always caused by not keeping to the oil change schedule or using the right oil. Most likely the previous owner(s) didn't keep up with the oil change schedule so the oilways are full of carbon build up...

Sometimes damage to the lifters can be permanent, due to either mechanical wear of the lifters or them being badly clogged with carbon deposits, sometimes its possible to restore them to normal operation by using an engine oil flush or using a specialist hydraulic lifter additive. Just doing a single normal oil change is unlikely to help quiet them down in my experience.

A flush could be done using something like this:

For this type of engine oil flush you first get the engine fully warmed up to normal operating temperature, add the flush, let the engine run for about 10 minutes, then drain the oil and put in new oil. (You probably don't need to change the filter if you've only just changed it) These types of flush try to remove carbon deposits and other contaminants, so this may help.

If that doesn't work you could try a hydraulic lifter additive like this:

This type of additive you just add to the oil and it is designed to be left in permanently, however I would recommend doing an oil change a few weeks later to get it out of the system. They also take a few days of normal driving before you may notice a difference.

I've used the Wynns additive on some stubborn noisy tappets on my Xantia V6 and whilst it didn't quiet all of them down, it did make most of them quiet. (I think there are still 2 or 3 noisy ones out of 24, but that's better than all 24 being noisy!) It took a few days of normal driving before most of the tappets suddenly went quiet. I changed the oil a couple of months after I used the additive and the ones that were quiet remained quiet.

So the above might be worth doing, however before you do anything make sure you confirm your engine does in fact have hydraulic lifters/tappets - I don't know that engine at all and am just going by what Peter has said, if it turns out it doesn't have hydraulic lifters/tappets none of this will make any difference and you would be looking for a different kind of problem altogether...

Hi all,

Thanks to Simon & Peter for the prompt advice.
I've lost touch with an old friend who was a mechanical engineer guiding me through many an issue( and saving me bucket loads time & money).
So I'll be reading through the info on your forum with keen interest!
By what I can work out at mo. It's the same engine and gearbox as the one in the C8,
I will go through the procedures you chaps adviced and give a progress report as things turn out.
Anymore info would be greatly appreciated!

Follow up to the above..
Previous owner was tight as a ducks ...
So I've assumed he's put cheapest lubricants in as he serviced at fast fit centre.

I think all the Hdi engines had hydraulic lifters but I am not positive, I believe the 2.1 XUD was the first and the Hdi followed on, if that's not correct I'm sure someone will tell me. :oops:

I agree with Mandrake, using the correct grade of oil and changing it regularly is essential for these HDi engines.
I have used Forte products professionally for years so recommend the stuff and this is what I would do. Pour Forte Motor Flush into the engine with the old oil and go for a good run.Change the oil AND OIL FILTER using fully synthetic 5/40. Also add a can of Forte Top End Treatment. That`s worked for me on many occasions.

Mind you Forte gets rid of the harmful lacquers and varnishes that build up inside an engine,it does not replace worn metal !!
