AX gearbox

here`s a teaser. driving along in my 1992 ax 1.4D when it started to make a loud ticking noise. i have jacked the car up but found nothing lose,scrapeing etc. it is definitely speed related does anyone have any ideas?

Start with the wheels - are they tight, then check the driveshafts, the nuts securing them to the hubs and so on. Does it make any difference if you are accelerating or decelerating? turning a corner etc.
It might be gearbox but they usually make whining noises first and the selection can get difficult.

speedo cable snapped today noise disapeared!
