Citroen dispatch 58 plate 2.0hdi black smoke on acceleration

Post by V234fdb »

Hi all,
My dispatch as a problem. Starts fine and drives fine but I was getting an overboost fault. Changed the map sensor, egr and maf and that fault as gone but I'm stuck getting black smoke on hard acceleration. Anyone know what it could be? Every now and then it throws up a egr fault about the position not fully closed.

That's roughly once a month.

Any hep appreciated!!

Thanks

Welcome to the forum!

Black (as opposed to blue, grey or white) smoke is a symptom of incompletely burnt fuel.

Do you just get a big puff of black smoke, or does it smoke while the throttle is wide open?

As it smokes (only?) under hard acceleration that suggests either over-fuelling or restricted air supply. However, replacing the MAF sensor should have sorted that out (Mass Air Flow) as it would compensate for things like a blocked air filter, collapsed air pipe etc.

Someone more familiar with this engine will be along before too long.

Yes it smokes black under wide open throttle but if you drive really steady then it's fine. Would a injector cause it?

Is the smoke having any effect on the performance or fuel consumption?

It seems to pull really well and fuel consumption isn't great

Sounds like over fueling but I didn't think that was possible with an Hdi. :?

Morning, got some new issues. Broke down on Saturday . RAC said egr is knackered. Blocked it off to get around this weekend but I've not got an overboost fault code. If I was to get the egr switch off through mapping, would this affect anything else or would it run properly?

Cheers

It'd likely affect certain members opinion of your morals, based on recent discussions (although each to their own, I say) and wouldn't be great for emissions but it'd run alright & I believe regen would be unaffected since EGR is closed for this anyway.

Personally I'd want it running correctly the way it was made, and to that end would try a genuine Valeo EGR (and make sure it's free to operate without crap in it's way) first of all & only then if the problem returned in an unreasonably short time would I consider mapping it out. I think with a properly installed good quality item it'd be fine tbh. I won't use ECP (or any of their other "trading styles" for that matter) even as a last resort now...
