Windows opening and closing by themselves

Post by faddy »

Bought this C5 a couple of weeks ago (2003 LX 110 HDI). I've owned a CX and BX in the past but been driving Japanese cars for the past 12 years, so this is likely to be the first of quite a few queries.

Came out from my son's flat this evening to find the driver's window opening itself a couple of inches then closing again and repeating the cycle. I think the passenger window was doing the same thing except not opening nearly as wide. Not quite sure at what point it stopped, I think it was when I unlocked the car. There was a very slight drizzle but I believe the LX doesn't have rain sensors?

Had an uneventful ride home but when I got back remote locking wasn't working (it's previously worked faultlessly in the short time I've had the car). Could this simply be the battery being a bit low after the window acrobatics, and driving back on headlights so it didn't recharge much?

No rain sensor on the LX.

Your presumption that the battery may be the cause is quite likely to be correct, low battery can cause all sorts of mayhem with them.

Have a go at the reset procedure when you get chance and take the opportunity to fully charge the battery when doing so.

Does yours have the window open third button on the key fob. If so, i'll bet the button is stuck down or the microswitch on the pcb is stuck closed. This would also I imagine explain the lack of central locking on the fob (fob battery flat)

Ah, yes it does, and the button does stick. The battery still reads 3.0v but as I'm testing it open circuit I don't suppose that means anything. Once I've got hold of a new battery I intend to tape over the windows contact on the PCB to avoid a repetition.

Fob probably just needs a good clean, they (mine anyway) can get sticky with muck - just did mine last week.
new batteries ordered, wrong ones delivered yesterday :(

It is quite simple to clean the rubber membrane. Just use a mild cleaner (soapy water would do) after taking it out of the key-fob. For the contacts I would use a proper contact cleaner. If the key-fob itself is dirty I would lift out the circuit board and then give it a good clean, drying it with paper towelling.
