Hi all, just heard from my parents that they've just bought a 2013 63-plate Berlingo Multispace. On asking about it it's a 1.6HDi (!)

What I want to know is, what engine is this likely to be & have these years still got issues with oil sludge/turbo failure etc? [-X [-o<

EDIT- a bit of further research shows it ought to at least be a DV6C 8 valve & thus not quite as prone to issues. Still needs the low SAPS oil though & long runs every couple of weeks for the good of the DPF right?

Right on your edit.

No 1.6hdi will have any sludge issues or turbo issues if serviced correctly with the correct oil. The manufacturers stretch the oil change intervals so they can sell vehicles, if you keep to the old fashioned 6k oil changes and stay with the manufacturer's intervals for a full service you will have a very happy ownership of a 1.6hdi.

Oil is cheap engines are not.

Yeah, they all tell me my 16v 1.6hdi is the nightmare to be aware of and that the 8v is a much safer/desirable version so you can stop fretting :)

I use Total INEO ECS which is low-saps, sold a lot cheaper elsewhere than Citroen's extortionate outlets! Changing the oil every 10K will be the best assurance against DPF clogging imo, as opposed to changing your driving style to include an italian tune-up stage every time. Then again, I have the luxury of access to Diagbox/Lexia which allows me to force a regeneration whenever I feel the DPF needs it.

Regardless, the DPF is expected to eventuallyclog up with cerin and need replacing, which I believe is around 150km mark?

Km or miles? I was under the impression that a clean-through might be needed about 75,000 odd miles and replacement at about 150,000 miles. It all depends on circumstances of course. I could imagine a fault with Cerine dosing might cause replacement to be needed earlier and careful driving of long distance journeys with low rev cruising would extend the period.

Thanks for the replies, seems like they might have got an alright little motor then. From what I've heard it's a former motability car with about 21k on the clock so will have a good look over it after they collect on Thursday and with any luck it won't have much in the way of DPF issues even if it has done short runs. Servicing is likely full dealer so i'll recommend the old school oil intervals with a filter every year & with correct oil and wee how it goes.

I think the manufacturers quote 150k miles but general "internet" experts quote ~80k miles.

I'd have to do more research on the cleaning services offered. I know it's a valid business for trucks but it's expensive (upwards £300 per unit) and needs specialist equipment. Seeing youtubes about using strong chemicals, detergents and a pressure hose probably have little to no effect on scrubbing out the cerin, I would have thought?

Perusing docbackup I came across a table of additive amounts relative to miles covered before the ECU gives a warning about "maximum additive" which is indicative of end-of-service-life for the DPF.

On the DV6TED4 (9HZ) 62,500 miles (100,000km).
For all other engines: 75,000 miles (120,000km).

Both mine (1.6 16V) are well beyond that (105k and 132k), neither have been cleaned or replaced, and neither has yet given an end of life warning.... :? [-o<

Planning on cleaning out the 307's later in the year when the cooling system is drained down to do the water pump and thermostat!

Same here Richard - 86,000miles though I did have the max additive warning which I've since reset. What's yours reading if it's not reached max yet?
