The Donk!

Post by lexi »

Has passed the Mot! Another year of Slum Motoring  Little advise on a blow just starting around Cat pipe. Need to get madam Wig Melder out. Not looked at it so don't know if it will work. He said it could be welded.............if you can weld. Bloody cheek! :-D Good emissions results. I told him:"Son, this is your 8v Donk engine, none of yer fancy motorbike racing engines in here"! Turns out, the guy served his time on BX and CX mostly and drives a Cit 7 seater thingy.
Right, what am I gonna do with the money I save on buying a 4 grand car :rofl2:

Nice one

If it's anything like the Xantia one, you might end up with something like this (the second time I welded it up!)

If it is like the Xantia, then getting it off the car is awkward - there is limited access to the top of the OS bolt - I ended up cutting it off (twice) - but then you can't get the stub out so have to cut the other end off - which is next to impossible (I considered whether I was going to have to take the engine out!). Reportedly there is access from the top to get a spanner on it....

Thanks for that Richard. I think I might be better getting in with it still attached to car. Inverter Stick welder may be my tool of choice. Put a bend in the rod to probe it in by the looks of it. Never get in with the Mig torch.

Having had a closer look today, it is a similar cat to that Xantia one. £100 seems to be the aftermarket price. I might just get a replacement.

Cat on the bench and getting welded. I will put a new long pipe on it after cutting the old one off . My cat is shorter than that one Richard and the joint is a trumpet flange at the bottom of Flexi. The other joint is just the cat pipe that goes into a widened section on main exhaust. Easier to get off than Xantia. C5's are easier for everything compared to Xanty. Now: There is no diagnostics on the Cat, no Lambda etc. Can the Cat be gutted? What about Mot? Warning lights? Do they put an xray on it at Mot time?

I decided to weld Cat, as it is not cat that has gone, but the pipes at either end right next to weld. I bet that is the reason most get renewed.

All done and back up running. Here is the cat. First pic I have cut off old pipe and measured a new section. I have beefed up the joint where the hanger is.
