2010 C4 Grand Picasso radiator fan fault

Post by Bsgti »

Hi, wondering if anyone knows what this issue could be my picasso has a fan fault, when I unlock the doors of my picasso, the radiator fan turns on and stays on until the car is locked again when it turns off after about 15 mins, there are no fault codes, no dash warnings but this dreaded fan that stays on and ultimately drains the battery.

Any ideas on potential faults please?

Hi and welcome to the Forum. Assuming this is a diesel , it could be that your vehicle was in the middle of a Diesel Particulate Filter Regeneration cycle when you switched the car ff and it does this to cool everything down as there is a lot of additional heat generated during a regeneration. If it doesn't complete the cycle (i.e. you switch the vehcile off again before it has had time to complete, then it will try and regenerate next time and the same thing may happen. Best thing is to take it for a good spin at a constant speed and keep it out of 6th gear if poss. for a good 20-30 mins to give the engine time to warm up and then regenerate. Short journeys are not good for diesels.

THanks for the response, I'll give this a try tonight and get back to you,

Would water in the engine fuse box cause this issue? I've seen a few posts suggesting this may happen?

Hi, cheers for the welcome, been a French car person for a while now, c3 vtr, renault Clio 182 cup, c4, Picasso and now luckily a 208 gti, by far the worst car was the 182, had so many issues it was getting a joke, the picasso in 7 years of ownership this is he only major issue I've had (apart from 3 replacement boot locks where the micro switch fails)

Well that of course won't help any :-D - but unless you have cause or reason to go checking there I would leave it for now - as it's not uncommon that once these are disturbed they can cause some issues. See if the regen fix solves the problem first and take it from there. Diesels need a good run if you do a ot of shortish journeys, as the car won't reach temperature to regenerate and of course the filter will start to block if the car cannot regenerate and burn off all the particulate matter when it needs to.

Assuming this has happened more than once, then I would suspect a fault with the fuse box, the temp sensor, or the fan unit. You will get a message on the screen if it fails the regen more than a couple of times. I had to put a new fan on ours because it was squealing. IIRC there is a small ECU on the fan itself, but I might be making that up! As there's no temp gauge on the C4 Pic, you can't tell if it thinks the engine is too hot - you would need a Lexia for this.

Thanks for the reply, yes been running now for over two weeks and we've had a few people out but none have the required software to fix, anyone know of any mobile mechanics with lexia in Chatham maritime? I could go to?

What engine is in it? I'll see if I can find a wiring diagram - you may be able to check the pin out on the fuse box to see what it's up to.

John, thanks for the kind offer, would be willing to pay for someone to fault find, but your probably too far away, don't want to make forum members drive halfway across the county to help me, but thanks anyway :)

Can't quite work this one out, the original battery was charged up at the weekend, and again the battery went flat over one night (only used it once and the fan was on 15 mins)

So I changed the old battery (7 years old) for a new one, doors open and fan comes on, stop, fan stilll on, next trip, fan on, hen locked the doors and the fan turned off!

Cue going out a few hours later unlock the door, NO FAN???? Drive to location stop, and fan switched off?

Confused now the issue seems to have cleared, or am I hinting it could have been a battery issue!

It does rather look like the battery was kippered.
Try giving it a full charge then checking periodically with a voltmeter to see how it performs.
I imagine one or more of the cells have collapsed.

Ah too late it gone to the big battery store in the sky.

I'll keep all informed if the issue returns, cheers.
