Random display change on new C3

Post by Filberton »

I've recently taken delivery of a new Citroen C3 (the new 2017 model Feel 1.2 Puretech). It seems a great little car but it has a simple but annoying problem. The on board display (controlled by centre computer screen) randomly changes the units from imperial to metric i.e. mph to kph/ mpg to Km/l etc. I know it is easy to change back but it is a bit of a nuisance when the display suddenly says 40 in a 30mph limit before I realise it has changed to kph. There is no rhyme or reason why it changes and it can go a week or more then one day I get in and when I start t has changed to metric. It is always on start-up (ie does not change whilst driving). Nothing else has a problem. (no warning lights, nothing to suggest the unit is re-setting) I suspect that somewhere it has a "default" of metric but I don't know why it re-sets and I can see no way to change the default setting or why it keeps resetting. Being a new model the dealer is puzzled, even though under warranty. Any ideas?

I believe the same module and head-unit was used on some later Peugeots and possibly the old model C3.

Hi. This is a known problem, as even when changing the units from the system menu it will randomly change back. The dealers are aware of this problem, and there is a software update for it. Contact your dealer advise them of the issue and that you know there is an update for the problem and they should update this for you free of charge.

A quick update.
We booked the car in to the main dealers who said they knew of the fault. They had it for a day and gleefully announced "all fixed" you should have no more trouble :-D

Guess what? yup.....it still regularly reverts back to kph, kilometres and litres :-( so I am becoming quite adept at resetting the configuring the display (as it is disconcerting to toddle down the Motorway at a nice 65mph only to glance down and see you are doing 95!! (before the penny drops).

When I have a moment we'll try the main dealers once again.

Absolutely, they have a duty to fix this as technically you could be breaking the law without realising it. Give them another chance to rectify it, then contact Citroën head office and tell them that effectively they have supplied you with a vehicle that will not display UK speed measurements and that you want it rectified immediately.

If, as I suspect this is a digital readout of the speed, it's not like you can see both speed units on a dial like on an older car. It will be MPH or KMH, so you have no choice.

Strikes me as a safety issue, quick glance, notice you are doing 110 when its really 70, hit the brakes, cause v.big accident - should be a recall really, plus as others have said there is a legal requirement to have a speedometer which reads within a certain tolerance - not sure what that is but its certainly not +/- 62%.

To cheer you up though, we have an older shape C3 with the 1.2 puretech, non turbo 82 bhp (you might have the turbo 110?). Anyway, the 82 is a very fine engine, very flexible for a small unit and nice driveability, we are up to 23k miles now. On the motorway, even with 4 + luggage, it really flies above 4500 rpm in 5th, takes on a whole new life. A few places in the rev range where it sounds a bit harsh but you soon drive through them. It's very high in my list of nice to live with engines of those I have owned.

(Not sure I like the new Citroen "touch, feel ...." nomenclature, at least they stopped short of calling the top model "fondle". Can't imagine anyone going up to a car salesperson and saying loudly "I want a feel")

The speedo can (in the UK) read OVER the speed by either 5 or 10%, but most NOT read under the speed!

Speaking of names, while "Feel" would not be great, how about "Grope"!

There's nothing wrong with the speedo calibration being under or over. It's just not retaining the correct unit of measurement on the display.

They'll likely have to re-apply the software update to the head unit ECU, re download or update the BSI software or replace the head unit. The units default to KMH when reset, so it's not retaining the MPH setting once changed.

Well, the latest is the car has been back again to the main dealer for yet another software update. So that is three times they have said it now has latest software......so as the car has only been on the market for 7 months that is not bad!! I think even Apple manage less updates than this.😂

This time it seems stable, for now at least and an added bonus is it now has Android Auto which means we can use Google Maps (so who would pay £500 for the built in satnav which does not give live traffic updates etc? And is a bit clunky compared to Google Maps.)
This is not a published update but available on a number of PSA vehicles so worth asking the dealer if you have to take your newish PSA in for work.

So for now at least......one happy bunny!! 😂😂😂

If someone has allowed their speed to get up to 110mph without realising it as above, they really shouldn't be allowed on the road!

The UK law is based on the EU standard, with some minor changes. A speedo must never show less than the actual speed, and must never show more than 110% of actual speed + 6.25mph. So if your true speed is 40mph, your speedo could legally be reading up to 50.25mph but never less than 40mph
