Hello,
I have a C4 2013 1.6 eHDi with about 30k miles on it. I would like to disable the EGR system and do a profesional remap, but i want to leave the DPF system running. Some peole say disabling the EGR will significantly shorten the life of the DPF. So do you think this is a good idea? Will there be any other negatives that i am not aware of?
Thank you.
P.S. please note that i live in a country where what i am about to do is legal if you do it right.

Re: C4 2013 EGR disabling
The recent remap i got changes the paremeters of the egr so it is closed about 99% of the time, and i was told i can blank it if i want to but it would make no difference. Different engine but presumably the theory is the same.

And have you received any comments on how the DPF will react to the disabling of the EGR? I'm mostly interested un that.

No, that wasnt mentioned. They could map the dpf out also, but then i would have to physically remove it, which would result in legal and MOT problems so i left it. I try not to use the car for short runs where it doesnt heat up properly so I hope it doesnt become an issue.

I don't care whether it's legal or not. Keep your car as it is so it runs as is and causes less pollution. It's not just you who breathes the air.onix45 wrote:Hello,

I know mine is now shut most, if not all the time, i do not know what it does to emissions. However the fact that I now get 7 miles further on each gallon of diesel, if my calculations are correct a 22% reduction in fuel consumption must be better for the envrioment. The fuel consumption is the biggest reason I got it done. The extra power and torque is a bonus. I suppose if I really cared about the enviroment, out of all the cars I could use, it would be the 107 doing the most miles (which it actually does)

Re: C4 2013 EGR disabling
Works the same as before, they asked me specifically if I wanted it mapped out or not, and I said no.
22% fuel reduction maybe, but how much extra NOx is it now putting out if the EGR is closed?... obviously not 22% less.

Re: C4 2013 EGR disabling
I would have no idea Mike. The only way to find out would be analyse the exhaust emissions compared to one in standard tune. If it was proved to be significantly worse it would maybe get pit back to standard. I do care, i have two, soon to be three grandkids breathing this air. My daughter is saving hard for a better car to replace her pd130 audi, she says it will probably be another vag car, i have advised her to go for a relatively new, relatively small capacity petrol engine.

Re: C4 2013 EGR disabling
I think if you map out the EGR on a 1.6 HDi without doing anything with the DPF, the DPF will block up in short order - the EGR is used to help provide heat during the re-gen process.

But as i understand the EGR provides heat during the regen by fully closing? By disabling the EGR, i am leaving it closed all the time, so shouldn't a permanently closed EGR valve help the regen?

Re: C4 2013 EGR disabling
The EGR does reduce NOx but slightly increases particulate matter.
Substituting oxygen rich air with recycled exhaust gas reduces the amount of combustible material proportionally within the cylinder. So you get a lower heat release and peak Cyl temp. which reduces NOx formation. The engine management system handles how often and when and should be left to do its job.
Just be aware that the Forum does not condone or support any action to disable Emission control systems. If you're having a problem with it I suggest you get it cleaned or replace it.
