I broke down,. Now up and running again

Post by Gibbo2286 »

Waiting for the AA to recover the C5 to home :( driving along no hints of trouble then dead, managed to get it off the road, can't see why at the moment but my neighbours boy put a Snap -on tester on it and it's coming up with maybe crankshaft sensor. Grrrr!

I think that must be the first time in fifty years that I couldn't get home without help.

Ah well, that's the joy of "modern" cars BUT not impressed with the AA that they couldn't even diagnose the problem, never mind replacing a CPS is, in many cases almost a routine repair, easilly done by by the roadside. (V8 Jeeps are an obvious exception - it's inside the timing chain cover!)

You were unlucky though, many go through a tizzacky phase & most will, having given you due warning, will, at least, let you get home.

Certainly not impressed with the AA, broke down at 5:10 pm, " We'll be with you within the hour sir."

My neighbours lad came out and lent me his car to get my passenger home and said he'd wait with my car for the AA, they kept calling him adding more time, they finally got there at 9:40 and back here at 10:15. (Car was fourteen miles from home.)

Haven't raised enough steam yet to go and diagnose it properly.

If you go out and now find the car starts straight up, that would be fairly typical of a dead CPS I reckon. they do sometimes come temporarily back to life when they cool down.

Over 5 hrs is terrible from the AA though, could've pushed it home in that time! :?

Well that's put it to bed for a while, it's the cam belt, only had a poke through the cover, it's loose on the pulley but I can't see if it's broken or if the tensioner has collapsed.

It's damned cold out there so the job's going to be on hold for a while.

Only about 7k miles, shouldn't have happened but I won't know why until I get round to stripping it, as for the weather there was an icy north east wind blowing across my patch and despite wearing a body warmer and anorak it was going right through, still blowing this morning but not quite as bad.

Bought myself an 02 Ford Focus 1.8 Ghia to serve until it's fixed.

Bad luck...

The good news is that it isn't a head off job. Remove the cam and the broken rockers, fish all the roller bearings out of the head, fit new rockers and the cam, time it up and away it will go again.

Lazy wind is never good for making progress outdoors :( that's pretty bad to only get 7k out of a belt/tensioners. Were they a good brand fitted by a garage? Just wondering if you may have some recourse with the supplier/garage if it's a premature failure or fitting error. Might not be much but it could help toward getting those new rockers etc.

They were a good brand fitted by myself so if it's dodgy in any way it's all down to me, can't think why though.

I was surprised at how it stopped, no nasty noises it just closed down as though it had run out of fuel, first thoughts were the low pressure pump in the tank.

Just in for a lunch break at the mo, got most of the rubbish off the top ready to undo the crankshaft pulley next.

Will be interested to know what has happened here, if the tensioner has failed then i think it's got to be a manufacturing fault.

My experience of cambelt/shaft failure has also been no nasty bangs/clattering & just stops like it's been switched off, that was the final death of the 3 cylinder XUD and it didn't make any really nasty sounds despite plainly hitting valves again. How many rockers have you found bust?

7k? Ye gads, that is about same as mine!
SKF cambelt kit with their water pump. My bearings were SKF...........China. You know, I think the best kit is what they fitted at new. I don't even know if they maintain that same standard on Gen Citroen over the counter in later years.
Maybe alternator belt has come off? I have replaced all that too at the same time as cambelt. You are some machine Gibbo to be still doing all this stuff 8-)

SKF have generally been good quality from what I've seen. I think you could be right lexi that there may be some outside factor involved in this failure.

Well it's all stripped down now, belt is unbroken unmarked, tensioner looks to have seized and melted the plastic, got a shower of ball bearings and toasted plastic shards when I took the bottom cover off.

All the rockers are broken and the job just got a lot more interesting.............. :( part of one of the rockers was wedged holding a valve spring down, a tweak with a screwdriver freed it but it must have shifted a collet, the spring damn near took my eye out as it and the cap and collets flew out bounced off the bonnet and disappeared, found one collet and the cap, spring and the other collet is tomorrow morning's search job.

PS it's done just over 10k miles in nearly three years since I last fixed it.
