C5 X7 leaky front strut.

Post by centurus2400 »

It never rains but it pours, or in this case dribbles orange blood
After having the steering rack replaced last year the car has been problem free and great to drive.
However, after leaving it parked up for a week I noticed a bit of a puddle underneath the drivers side front wheel.
Investigation with a torch shows a leaking and very wet suspension strut.

Any idea how much this little lot will cost to fix - I can hear my piggy bank crying already!

I have just fitted a C6 one & it was £333 + vat just for the part, I believe C5 ones are about the same.

So what we are saying with these models, is that once you get a strut or two, a new steering rack, a few bottom ball joints. then pray about the DMF, DPF twin turbos and leccy handbrake............you have a decent car

Either that, or spend the same kind of money buying a large stock of Xantiae to ensure you always have at least one roadworthy and running car at any given time lol

They can't be all that bad though I suppose otherwise we wouldn't have so many folk persevering with the things? If I absolutely HAD to get rid of the Xantia and buy a newer car it's one I would consider anyway. I think I'd much rather "downgrade" if that's the right word, to a BX or CX though than deal with modernity in any sensible or adult kind of way :D

I will try to buy one that someone on here has fixed up  I like the look of them and the proper suspension of course.

Have you checked that it is not just the leak-off hose that is split?

The system on these has done away with the rubber return pipes.
In case anyone finds themselves in the same position, the cost of a new strut is £349.87 plus VAT

My local indy has quoted an all inclusive price of £609 for the job.
I'll probably ask him to change the upper and lower ball joints at the same time, it won't add a great deal to the bill and would seem to make sense.

When I thought that the rear struts on my Mk1 C5 were leaking I was able to price up just the O-rings. Is that no longer possible on the X7?

I had to replace both front struts on my C5 when I had it, IIRC the leaks were from the seals around the chrome strut.
