hi all
the self build camper has now completed 2 weekends away! first was a short 60 mile round-trip encompassing all manner of hills and twisties and was.. like a big white van really.. but driveable.. easter weekend saw a long run to Dorset and back.. so I think in all about 330 miles between the two.. 60L of fuel and a 1/4 of a tank left.. not expecting amazing economy..
the 5th gear, in fact all gears are very low.. roundabouts usually taken in 4th! 60mph = 2800 rpm ish.. so its a bit noisy but ok..
the van always has a reverse judder.. I had hoped that driveshaft, clutch, engine mounts being replaced woud cure this but no chance.. there is a likelyhood that reverse gear is just too high for a laden van.
but the point of this post is that I am noticing a clutch pedal activated rattle but only on downshifting (when clutch is re-engaged as peddle is lifted back up - when the gearbox input shaft is rotating faster than the engine.. I can drive around it but engine braking is a handy feature to have..
I am suspecting the input shaft bearing or the release arm sleeve bearing (pull clutch) - could either of this cause this rattle and 'maybe' slight feeling through the pedal (as I type the release arm is becoming no.1 contender)
any thoughts welcome

Re: boxer transmission isses
I made a small discovery this week... a rear engine mount bolt was loose.. I think this was my rattling sound !
however, I decided to dive in and have another go at the judder issues and over 2 days i dropped the gearbox back off..which is a tricky job in a van
the judder manifests itself as soon as you start to move, and is worse in reverse. but the gearbox hasn't really started turning by this point.. bearing in mind my clutch is 300 miles old and this judder happened with the old clutch as well, I wonder if the flywheel (smf) could be contaminated or warped?
yesterday I took it to be given a skim for £70 ouch.. it was heat damaged with thin cracks and discoloured..
fingers crossed
john

Re: boxer transmission isses
Knowing it was a van in a previous life John, it's likely the clutch has been well abused in the past...
Hope the skim fixes it

thanks JIm.. I have noticed something else today.. a 'finger' on the release arm is worn.. i wonder now if that could be the cause.. the clutch wouldn't pull square if the release bearing was on the slope..

That's not going to help John so I'd replace it...
Also, check the release arm axle bearings too... They in the BE3 can cause similar issues... In the BE3 they're just nylon bushes and I don't know what yours are like/made of but worth a close check...

new arm ordered..60£ ouch..it's a fairly hefty thing with a plain bearing through its centre.. to remove the box you need to drift the shaft out first..after drilling a hole through bell housing, blindly

Re: boxer transmission isses
all fixed lads...
I dont know if it was the flywheel or the release fork.. my suspicions are the fork.. it would pull the clutch at an angle..
expensive old diesel !
