C5 (X7 HDI165) - What wrench size does the engine oil filter cap need?

Post by zakazak »

Hey there,

I have a Citroen C5 HDI165 (X7 from 2011) and just replaced the air filter.

In a few days I want to replace oil + oil filter. How ever, I just tried to fit some of my wrenches / nuts on the on the oil-filter-cap and it feels like nothing fits perfect ?!
Is it a middle-size or any "special size" ? Or did I simply not put the nut/wrench on it correctly?

Can anyone tell me what tool / size I need to open that damn thing? :)

Thanks !

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

It's recommended that you use one of these - an oil filter wrench. It is very easy to 'thread' the plastic on the top as it hasn't got the leverage to undo the oil filter cover and you may damage it.

Facom U46CL Oil Wrench

There are of course similar oil wrenches, but this is the one Citroen recommend (I'm not suggesting you buy one at these prices - it's just for reference)!

I have one of those (not Facom but similiar)... never really got great results with it as the oil filter just slips through it :/
Also: Why does it come with so many adapters?

What use does the plastic have then? :o
Maybe I can use both? An oil filter wrench + the plastic cap? But even then, I would need the size of the cap :S
And for tightening the cap I would need a torque wrench? That means it would need to be done via the plastic cap again ?

Those extra bits shown are the various oil sump bits that come with this particular kit (for this sort of investment, it is designed to work on many car models)

I guess that the top part is to be used in conjunction with the wrench, so you don't put too much strain on the plastic nut alone. Also, make sure you replace the seal when replacing the oil filter cartridge.

Yup, my new oil filter cam with a new seal.

Alright so I will use the combination of oil filter wrench + plastic cap. But still: What size does the plastic cap have? :D

Anyone knows? :)

There's actually no mention of using any other tool in the specific oil filter replacement service procedures for your X7, apart from the wrench, so doesn't list the size. I'm sure another member who has done the job will be along to help you with the size.

Wrench is just the American term for the English spanner. They are the same thing.

Well I am not a native english speaker so both term don't make much sense to me lol.

But I guess I figured it out neverless: a wrench that can be changed to any size you want to. Like the Gedore 60S10JP.

No, a ratchet spanner is not adjustable for size. The central ring will rotate one direction and stops the other way. Like this-

Is the housing the same as that on the facelift C5?
if so, the proper socket with cutouts is by far the most effective tool.
