Dash lights switch off? (C5)
heya all , I wonder if anyone can help?
my 2002 car , the instrument panel lighting turns off! the dials all work , as for the stalk controls (indicators, lights etc). On starting in the morning its all fine, green flashing indicators etc , but after a few minutes its as if someone flicks a switch and it goes black! tried looking in lexia and no faults can be found , illumination is set to level 15 (100%).
Any ideas?
Also (might be unrelated) the wiper stalk is a bit `funny` - the rear wipers switch on the front jet wash and rear wiper , whereas pulling the stalk does the front light wash , front wipers and rear jet wash!

Re: Dash lights switch off? (C5)
Sounds like a BSI glitch IMO, have you done a reset? not sure of the correct procedure but that can cure all kinds of weird behaviour. Otherwise, is the battery in tip top condition and fully charged?

Re: Dash lights switch off? (C5)
This smacks of a faulty Comms unit. This is typical behaviour when it starts to play up - often the indicators will not cancel, the headlights will switch on and off on their own or switch from dipped to main beam. Sometimes the lights will switch off on their own, wipers will play up etc. The Comms unit controls most of theses function and links directly to the BSI. If you've checked your earthing connections, I would suspect the comms unit. If you post up your VIN I'll be able to let you know the correct replacement as there are hundreds of these and you need the correct one.Harlequin wrote:heya all , I wonder if anyone can help?

Re: Dash lights switch off? (C5)
Yes have done a proper and extended BSi reset
Everything works, auto lights and wipers - its just the instrument panel goes dark (although working now) , almost as if it goes to `black panel` mode, but the button doesn't switch it back on. But the stalks work , everything works , just goes dark!
is the comms unit the item all the stalks plug into?

Re: Dash lights switch off? (C5)
Yes Simon, that's the Comms Unit. On your car it is part 6242 H4. You retain your own cruise control and audio stalk units - these are transferable to the new unit and just clip in. Here is a link to a company that supplies both new and reconditioned units:
http://www.peugeotpartsforsale.com/inde ... =6242%20H4
This is one suggestion as you mentioned the wipers are behaving erratically - the front and rear especially. Have a look at the issues they mention - click on any one of the first 2 in the link (one is a new unit, the next is a refurb.)
I'll have a look at the wiring for the instrument panel lighting for you in the meantime.
Update: Just the simple rheostat lighting controlled by the right hand push in rotary button on the instrument panel (I think it dims and brightens by pushing the button in until desired level is reached)
I have no info for the fuse details for the 2002 model unfortunately.

Did it just heal itself or was that as a result of you doing something?

Just keep an eye on it - Comms units can be hard to diagnose as the issues can be random. If it is failing, it will probably start playing up again.

Re: Dash lights switch off? (C5)
hmmm well all I did initially was turn DRL on in BSI - now I`ve turned it off and it seems to now be working properly.

Re: Dash lights switch off? (C5)
You need to watch what you change in the BSI as there are some settings that must be set to default values as changing them can have an adverse effect on the car. Some settings are model dependent too and rely on the relevant ECU or kit being present. At least you got yours back to normal, whereas some people I know have left tbeir car in an unusable state!

Re: Dash lights switch off? (C5)
I hate DRLs with a passion anyway, not because I believe lights ought to be off during daylight (in fact I'm the opposite, I usually put the lights on before the end of the road no matter what the conditions, every little helps!), but due to the amount of dozy drivers happily cruising round at night with no tail lights on is increasing and I blame it on the bright LED DRLs that allow them to "forget" to check if their actual lights are either ON or AUTO... And as for auto lights, they're a lesser bugbear but still a liability IMO if the switch gets turned back to OFF it's easy enough round town for people to not realise they're in darkness... (unless of course it's just the idiots round here lol) [/rant]

1 good thing I switched on - auto rear wiper in rain when reverse is engaged. For some reason it was turned off
