Parked in gear got no hand brake mk1 C5 advise

Post by waynedance »

Waiting for my hand brake guide tubes to arrive as the cables will not come out of them. I think the cables are sticking which is making the calipers stick.

Not looking forward to changing them as I read they can be a pain to change.

Any tips would be great.

Hi Wayne,
Having tried and failed the brute force and ignorance method to remove the cables in situe from the wheel arch end, I removed mine by putting the remaining cable into the chuck of a variable speed, variable direction electric drill and it came out as it was being pulled and rotated.
Replaced the same way with loads of lubrication and rotation in the direction of the manufacture of the cable winding.
Only caveat is the condition of the tubes, in case the demon rust has weakened them.

Hope that helps

Andy

General consensus is to dump the tubes and replace with new ones.
I had mine filled with grease prior to fitting in the hope that it would stave off the corrosion.

Before you pull them out connect a cable of some sort to the inner end and pull it through with the old tube, this will help you guide the new one in via the correct route. I used one of those flexible drain cleaners.
The LH one is the most awkward, you'll need to lower some of the under floor protection but if you're good at Chinese puzzles you'll be ok. :)

Calipers still sticking guess the cables knackered them.

This will sort it..... £45.99+ vat trade (no vat on these for me).

It won't be the cables that did for your calipers - they seize up for fun, without any provocation.

Well that did not got to plan....stopped at work to sort myself.

Left at work on the ramp good job I got use of company van as live 20 miles from work.

Not touching cars again leave to the mechanics at work.
