I meant on a rolling road or similar James - even on a real MOT.

Chris, I would check the 'thingy' as they don't like water or muck as well.

Jeep ones just have to put up with it! but THEY do suffer from Neutral Safety Switches, which can produce exactly those symptoms. Just a thought, no harm in a little X-polination of ideas

I thought I'd publish the end result of the "starter motor failure". Turns out it wasn't the starter motor at all. It was the ignition switch. It failed again a couple of days before I went on holiday last month. Left it with the garage whilst I was away, expecting a new starter motor. Instead I have a rocker switch attached to the steering cover beside the ignition switch. I have to turn the key and hold the switch till she starts. I'm now wondering whether to leave as is or replace with another ignition switch? Presumably its easy enough to get the barrel out of the switch and to put it into another?

Removing the ignition barrel is easy Chris. If I remember correctly ignition barrel switch has a front and back which separates.
If you have access to a 2nd ignition switch the back parts and reassemble and problem solved.

Is it the ignition switch that has failed or simply the feed wires? If the latter, relay mod in the circuit will most likely fix, or you could replace the rocker switch with a push button starter? (essentially the same as the installed switch)

Relay mod as per the V6 will work a treat on the HDi

I thought MK2's had the relay mod done as standard.

Only for the heater blower Kenny, not the starter motor...

It's buried deeply in my blog I think Chris...

But meanwhile, this thread will give the bare details... Look at my post in in a little way down ;)

On a MK1,
Starter motor
Headlamps
Fan motor.

Not sure if the MK2 needs the headlamp one or not.
