AL4- Question

Post by lancia58 »

Hi

I notice some strange behavior with the AL4 that is mounted on my MK-II Xantia. During the first 3 minutes ( approximately ) after start driving the car when it change from first to second gear it looks like the AL4 is in neutral for a second before the second gear is engaged , this also happened for a 2 to 3 gear shift. After three minutes of driving the AL4 turns to normal behavior. I change the electro valve ( part number 2574 16 ) and the gear oil but it did help. The gear ECU SW is suitable for the newer Borg Warner electro valve .

Any ideas ?

Thanks
Zohar

There is a good workshop manual online for these boxes. Renault have the same box with a different name. Look up some Renault problems on google.
The box was in some Scenics and other models. Your problem sounds a familiar one to me but I cannot remember what it is. I read up on these quite a bit on the Renault forums but I have forgotten the lot now.
Don't have the link for the gearbox manual now either. I would try and locate the problem rather than use the snake oil. You must use Dexron 11 with that box. Some of the problems with newer and thinner oils are well documented. Try to google the name of Renault version of AL4 box. That will let you search further to more models with your problem. I think that box was developed by Siemens with the respective French car companies.

Hi

I always use the genuine oil that I buy from a local Citroen grage. The ECU of the AL4 developped by Simense as for the gear itslef I am not sure. I'll look for the renault AL4 version that is AKA DPO.

Thanks

Correct me if I'm wrong but shouldn't the AL4 box have LT71141 transmission oil only ?

Any Ideas why AL4 is in neutral for a second before the second gear is engaged

Yes my apologies on the Dex 2. I am thinking of the auto box before AL4 in PSA cars. It may have been the Borg/ Warner that took the Dex 2. Same fluid as 4hp 20 for the AL4.

Any Ideas why AL4 is in neutral for a second before the second gear is engaged
If you mean slow when paddling from first to second gear at standstill, then it’s because two electrovalves have to close, one after the other, to engage second gear.

The electronics of the C5 are slow.
Probably that the ECU has to telegraph the ashtray, the back seat and the tailpipe to ask them if it’s OK to go to second gear.
Only after the three have agreed will the box shift to second gear.

The headlights are also slow to budge.
When you try to quickly flash the high beam, it reacts so slowly that the lights only come on after you have released the stalk.

Muhammad Ali once said that he was so fast that when he flicked the bedroom light off, he was in the bed before the room got dark.
The C5 is the opposite; the lights may only come on after you have switched them off.

our 206 is the same in the "flasher" stakes, and the horn too... you try to be polite and give someone a "pip pip" to let them know you're there (as per highway code) and you get bugger all in response... press longer and you get a "beeeeeep, outta my way a-hole" kind of affair...
