Xenon D2R bulbs what do people recommend?

Post by waynedance »

Currently have some Ring branded bulbs which have been in for approx 3 to 4 years, approx 35 to 45k.

Been looking at these as I would like some brighter bulbs, driving at night seems no fun like it used to be.

http://www.philips.co.uk/c-p/85126XV2C1 ... ifications

Or these

http://www.philips.co.uk/c-p/85126XVC1/ ... light-bulb

Can get the second ones which are the 1st gen bulbs for just under £60.00. Any other recommendations.

Thanks.

I've just (literally yesterday!) changed the D2R bulbs in mine, because one in particular had gone dim and flickery.
I spent ages looking round, hate how expensive they are.
There are magazine reviews out there that I found online, that were useful.
In the end I bought a pair of these because they seemed to have reasonable reviews (there are much brighter/higher spec ones, but they're good quality rather than unbranded crap with dubious life and beam pattern) without breaking the bank.
It turns out they are what was previously in mine, with the exception of a slight difference in the end of the part code (was 66050, these are 66250). For the price, I couldn't argue!

It depends how much you want to spend really. These are an inexpensive decent quality bulb, but they're an old spec not up to the more recent Osram Nightbreaker Unlimited D2Rs, for example.

Yes, cannot fault the OSRAM Nightbreakers Xenarc Unlimited. I replaced my bog standard D1S Osrams as they were not as bright as the Xenons on my Mark II C5. Spent ages looking and decided on these. I can't seem to find a D2R in this type though unfortunately. What I would say though, is be VERY careful where you buy them from as there are loads of copies on the net that look almost identical. I would really suggest buying from an approved stockist to ensure you don't end up with a Chinese fake.

Comparing my old and new, the replacements (Nightbreaker Xenarc Intense) I got are definitely genuine.

According to osram's own website the unlimited are available in D2R.

That link is just for the standard Xenarc Iain, I already checked and they don't have these in the D2R:
http://www.nightbreakerunlimited.co.uk/xenon-hid-nbu
Only the D1S*, D2S, D3S, D4S
These are their recommended sellers for the genuine article:
ABD
Driven2Automotive
Powerbulbs

It's probably because Wayne's car doesn't have the directional projector lenses.

Already looked at the top line Osram and seen there is no D2R.

Oh mk1 C5 with normal reflector lights.

Ah yes sorry you're right. When I did a search, the link described itself as Xenarc unlimited, but looking at the page, you're right, that's for originals #-o

I replaced my d2r bulbs about two months ago with some cheap Chinese bulbs from eBay, I must say they are still working ok and are brighter than my old ones.

How ever I know they will not have a long life span and this brings me to my next question as I have not seen it posted here on the forums.

I have a 2002 c5 estate an SX model with normal bulbs fitted can the head lamp units be swopped over to my 2003 c5 exclusive estate with Xeon units in it. I would like to get rid of the Xeon headlight units they are not a good choice for night driving the light is poor if it's been raining.

Unless I've misunderstood your post, it seems you're trying to do the opposite and remove the xenon headlights and replace them with normal halogen headlights, is this the case?

Xenon headlights will always be brighter than halogen. This is how they are designed and double the width of vision over the halogens. The only reason why they would not be sufficiently bright is if they are not replaced with OEM original bulbs but cheaper copies. If you are paying a lot less for the bulbs, then they are fakes and this has been well-publicised that they will be a poorer quality bulb, badly wired and use cheap components.

If I have understood this correctly, and you want to replace the xenons with halogen headlamps, you will also have to replace the electronics and the wiring, as the voltages to the xenon headlamps are far higher than those required for halogens. I'll have a look to see what the differences are in wiring tomorrow.

Keep the xenon lights far better than normal light. You may need better 4300k bulbs.

I've had a look at the wiring and there are issues to consider concerning the beam correctors, the wiring connectors and harness, the BSI to telecode to inform it of the changes - and there could be several other areas in terms of fuses and relays that may be different that I can't ascertain from the diagrams in comparison. My advice would be to get some proper OEM Xenons and / or check to see if your headlamp glass has faded. If it has dulled over the years, it is quite an easy job to polish it out and restore it to near original clarity - there are a load of YouTube vids on how to do this properly.

Thanks guys, the lamps are new last year and are in good condition the bulbs are new also but they are very poor when the road is wet. They are so bad it's unsafe to drive at night, not sure if this alters anything but the invertors for the bulb are part of the lamps on my old lamps you could unplug the invertor and take it out to change the bulb.
The bulbs are a d2r 35watt is there a brighter version that can be fitted or do I have to upgrade the invertor as well ?

The ballast and igniter shouldn't be the problem, it should supply and regulate the power accordingly. There are alternatives D2R like these which provide a claimed 50% extra more light. You should not increase the wattage - these are designed to be 35W. They are not cheap, but you get what you pay for though I'm afraid. :)
