Post by colin machin »

hi i have a c3 mk2 vti 1,4 petrol 2011 year .the heater is blowing cold .if i let it run in the garage it will warm up and the heater blows worm and the top hose gets hot .when i take it out it runs warm for a short time then blows cold i stop and leave it running and the top hose and rad are cold .it seems like a thermostat problem but with the thermostat costing so much i wont to make sure that its that that's at fault be for i start the job i have been told that a thermostat is in the region of £80 any ideas welcome

Your issue does sound typical of a thermostat problem - it should open at about 90°C with the fans kicking in at just over this temperature. If the thermostat is faulty, it's probably not letting the engine warm up enough.

I'm afraid this particular vehicle is showing 2 types of Engine Outlet Water Tanks, so I can't be sure of which one you have - you can see their are 2 types of water outlets. If I use the full VIN on my system it doesn't bring up anything apart from the car model, but if using the VIS (last 8 digits) it brings up everything - however on service Citroen it the full VIN brings up ll the data! So I've included both diagrams.
Option 1:
Temperature sensor Part: 9810048680, price £33.42 inc. VAT from Citroen (Part 10 in the diagram). That's just for the part of course. It also says something about requiring the harness (Part 13) if not present for a remote T. Sensor) but as I can't access any technical docs. I can't elaborate on this any further.
C3 Temp Sensor Option 1
C3 Temp Sensor Option 1
Option 2:
Sensor Engine Management Part: 1338 F3, price £36.00 inc. VAT from Citroen (Part 2 in the diagram).

Don't forget you'll need to replace the seals / gaskets too when changing this. Also, make sure you replace coolant with the long life stuff Citroen use - some types cannot be mixed, or they'll react and cause major issues. Citroen should be able to identify the type of coolant in your system for you.

thanks marc i did the job this morning it looked quite daunting .with lots of wiring and heater hoses round the back side of the engine .the part is slightly different than it shows on you pictures and has a extended piece that goes round the back of the engine and connects to a hose that is one of them quick push in connections and the pump has 3 fitting bolts not as the pictures shows 2 . the book time is 1.9 it took me 4 hours to do . and the part is as you said modified and it has to have the wiring loom .again thanks for the time and and pictures it was a big help.by the way the jobs a success .

Sound Job, glad you got it sorted Colin. They do have a nasty habit of making subtle changes that don't always make it to revised diagram, but I'm pleased they helped a little. :-D

the thermostat housing was different because the engine is a vti hence the price so any one buying a pump will find prices are £25. £65 or £165 in including the modified wiring loom depending what type engine
