The car now has another fan fitted in it. The one I had, with it connected directly to the battery was only starting when it got a push to start it. I got one from a scrappy for a tenner which did go immediately with power applied to it, but it was for a non air con model so did not have the electronic controller and a slightly different housing. However the basic motor was the exact same, so swapped the motors in the housings, plugged it in and it is working as it should. I could find nothing on the car which had suggesting it was rubbing which caused the fan Jim sent me to give up, but I notices when it was running full speed the fan blade circle seemed to be off centre, which maybe caused it. The replacement runs true. Anyway I hope this fixes the issue for good

Re: Heating fan
Is that spaghetti a resistance ???
Isn't/wasn't there a similar problem last year with Opels/Vauxhalls catching fire because of shoddy fan resistors?

Re: Heating fan
Bloody 'ell Trevor m'lad, what a botch job! And they say French and Italian electrics aren't the best...
And yes, there was a spate of Zafira B's going up in smoke although GM seemed to suggest it was a result of cheap replacement controllers rather than duff originals... Methinks it's more than likely cheap connectors/faulty crimping on the terminals causing the lot to arc/overheat (perhaps causing a lot of controllers to be replaced as a result of dodgy fan operation, thus giving Vaux the "get out" that it was dodgy aftermarket kit causing the issue.)
I think there's also a few Corsas been going woof of late too, although that's a separate fault with the fuel injection I think.

Re: Heating fan
Davies fan is stripped down and repairable. I'm ordering new brushes for it right now. When they arrive it'll be about a 15 minute job to install them and reassemble. I've got pictures but will have to wait for proper internet to upload them for everyones benefit.
Re: RE: Re: Heating fan
I've had the pleasure of working on more than one TVR in the past. Some of the "craftsmanship" that went into them makes early Daewoos look as well built as 1970s Mercs.CitroJim wrote:Quality! Not!
