Interesting comments on bulbs and MOT tests... I've learned a lot over these last few posts..
MOTs - rather than making the first test at 4 years they ought to reduce it to 2 years, if not one. I can't agree with every two years for subsequent MOTs either... A year is pushing it in my book... 6 months would be more sensible.

Our MOT is nonsense though, I've seen so many dangerous cars pass. Something more like the Irish or Spanish system which is automated and not down to how well you know the tester or how alert they are on the day would be far better.

Agreed - having had years of experience of both UK MoT and Spanish ITV testing, the fragmented and variable UK set-up is a bit 'variable', to say the least. I used to have my own trusted tester in the UK, too, who would not needlessly fail things, knowing full well that his workshop would not be asked to do any repair work. Having testing done by commercial repair workshops always seemed to me a classic conflict of interest!
The Spanish ITV test was only introduced some time in the '90s, I believe, and was set up as a series of state-run testing stations, multi-lane, and varying from large to enormous. This was done to sidestep almost certain bribery and fraud, endemic elsewhere, and at a time when most Spanish cars in rural areas were near-wrecks.
Current regime is first test due at 4 years, then every two until 10 years old, when it becomes annual. Commercial vehicles and PSVs tested every 6 months. Cost is roughly €40 incl vat/iva for a car, with tests bookable on-line at any regional centre of your choice.
Good fun to see a moped being processed alongside a 44-tonner, the former often in a bay of their own, and the latter being emissions-thrashed in a soundproof enclosure.
Pass/fail/advisory print-out at the end includes a still photo of the rear of the car and usually of the Tester too, date- and time-stamped.

I've always believed that the MOT should not be undertaken by garages, even the so-called 'We only do MOTs' types of establishments...
VOSA should do it... They do it for other aspects of vehicle compliance so why not MOTs?
The Spanish ITV looks a very good model to follow.

What about the council-run MOT stations? - seem to have a decent reputation.

Here in France it's 2 yearly after 5 years old, and I think every 5 years for cars over 25 if they're registered as 'historic'. If a car fails (but isn't dangerous) you get 2 months before you need to retest, you can still drive it as normal. Motorbikes don't need a Mot!!! 150hp blackbird-no MOT required!! But like the Spanish the test centres cannot repair and are not garages. Oh and a split cv boot isn't a fail because it is only protection for the bearing. If the bearing is good it's an advisory. The most common advisory is 'engine leaks oil'

I'd just like to see it standardised properly and taken out of the hands of an individual who're possibly skilled and professional but possibly not. Consistency is key really, I know of garages over the road from one another with totally different pass standards. I also think the free retest causes cars to pass that maybe should not on account of it taking more of the testers time for minor work that is not profitable to the garage. I am friends with 2 MOT testers and both think the test is a sham but are happy for it to pay their wages, both are very competent mechanics that I often ask for advice and would consider engineers rather than mechanics really.

Back on topic [emoji4] The problem with my fan is definately that the motor is very terminally ill. Power direct off battery, no fuses or anything to the motor and the motor runs for about 10 seconds then slows down to nearly stopped. So therfore new motor required.

Our Toyota (Denso) blower motor (€300 for a new one, which I fitted when the old one croaked) was not intended to be serviced or re-brushed, but I opened it up a few months ago, and found re-brushing to be simple and straightforward.
