berlingo cam belt

Post by sussex flyer »

is the recomended cambelt mileage change of 80000miles on 2000xreg berlingo 1.9diesel realistic or should it be done sooner? as a courier I do on average 2300 miles a week ;mainly motorway, how often should servicing be done as I change the oil and filter every 6000 miles or so and change brake pads etc myself?any views appreciated.

yes 80,000 miles as long as it is on 10,000 mile service intervals. 72,000 if it is on 6 or 9,000 intervals

Hi, good luck with your Berlingo, I lease (that may soon be leased) one from the courier company that provided me with work. I was adviced that a service every 20,000 miles was sufficent, service and repairs to be at my expense.
Anyway after 17,000 miles I had a major breakdown (details contained within another thread I posted). I am a bit p****d off that the company wants to get the costs back from me for the repair, especially as the opinion of the dealer was that it had not been maintained properly and has had some botch jobs done to it.
Think I'm gonna cut and run and hopefuly find a job.
I hope you have more success in your business than I have, I am told that a well maintained Berlingo is a good nippy van so you should be alright!

I wouldn´t be happy driving on a cambelt at 80K. My own policy on our four diesels is to change at 40000. Oil and filters changed at 6000, even on the HDI.

I think that, assuming your cambelt is running freely and you have replaced the idler rollers as advised, the factor that limits the lifetime of a belt isn't just milage - its ageing of the rubber or rubber/artificial compounds. If car manufacturers didn't think that cars could travel the stated milages between belt changes, they wouldn't give them - they are quick enough to find any good reson to get your car into one of their workshops, aren't they?
Unless you only drive a couple of 1000 miles a year, I see no reason for not keeping to the manufacturers recommendations. My own XM TD12 has only ever had the cambelt changed at 120,000 km = 75,000 miles intervals and it's done over 500 000 km without any trouble - and here lies the fact - it does around 55,000 - 60,000 km a year, so the belt gets changed every other year regardless.

HI, just a quick note to thank those who replied to my query as this is the first chance I have had since posting it. As a new member to the site I would like to say what a great idea it is and that I will be using it more in the future. Cheers!
