Just since the very cold mornings, the C5 info brings up "Oil level not recognised" (or similar).
Switch off/on and the message has gone. Check the level to find that , if anything, it has been overfilled. I have a "Pella" type pump, and I'm tempted to remove some oil. Any thoughts?

I would certainly do that first. I had a problem that sounds the same as yours which was fixed under warranty. It's a recognised problem that occurs on the 2.0 so not sure if it applies to yours as well. Here's the link to my story (amongst others).

Cheers Paul . Can't see what cutting a bit off the dipstick tube would achieve really, except letting the dipstick further into the sump, but as there seems to be too much oil in there already it would surely read even higher . I suspect an electrical fault due to cold weather but I'll get round to sucking some oil out eventually.

I don't think that the tube was cut at the top but at the bottom. This would mean that the stick would still go in to the same depth but then wouldn't be subject to the effects of wicking, pulling the oil up.
Having said that I don't see how that affects the electric oil level sensor which, apparently, is at the rear of the engine!

I'm with you. As you say though, surely the sensor measures the sump, not in the dipstick tube.

While it's a nice "gadget" to have, I personally don't see anything wrong with opening the bonnet once in a while and dipping the stick. Physical evidence is always going to be more trustworthy than electronics no matter what car (provided the dipstick/tube are correctly designed in the first place, which I appreciate may not be the case here.)

^Good in theory but I must admit to complacency there.
I have an oil level indicator on the dash but only remember to check it once in a blue moon, the same with the under bonnet alternative. I check it when I change it as it and it's predecessor never use/d any oil between changes - an eggcup full at most.
Do change it at approximately half the official service interval though.

Same here. Oil and filter changes done at 6k (10k km) mile intervals, and oil use is virtually zero.
