C4 1.6HDI - Auxiliary electric heater?
Hi,
can anyone tell me the fuse & relay location for the electric heater element that helps provide quick heat into the cabin on cold days.
I suspect that the electric heater isn't working as it takes an age to get even luke warm air out of the vents so would like to check it out.
Cheers.

You'll need to post up your VIN so as we can see what options the car has and this will also be needed to determine equipment prior to accessing any electrical diagrams.

OK, you don't have an actual additional heating unit on this model if that is what you are referring to - here is the main heater housing in the car.
On the following diagram you have item (1) Heater Control Resistor and item (3) Air Heating Resistance.

Re: C4 1.6HDI - Auxiliary electric heater?
That's the heating resistance unit as I know it - the term 'auxiliary heating' to me is the additional heating usually installed for colder countries, but I've used this picture as I'm guessing that's what 'Uncle Buck' is referring to richard

Re: C4 1.6HDI - Auxiliary electric heater?
Yes I mean item number 3.
I didn't know what it was officially called so I called it "Auxiliary heating" as it's only the diesels that have it.
Cheers.

No worries - it's part number 6445 XC (£160.87 ex VAT, £193.04 inc. VAT) from Citroen.uncle buck wrote:Yes I mean item number 3.

I've only managed to find one used on the bay (no guarantees how long that will last though) at £33 (inc. the £9 postage) here:

Re: C4 1.6HDI - Auxiliary electric heater?
Looks like it's fed off fuse 12 on the board on top of the battery.
Marc - item 1/2 is the blower resistor.

Re: C4 1.6HDI - Auxiliary electric heater?
@ GiveMeABbreak,
Thanks for the info and the link, if it's broken it will definitely be a 2nd hand unit at those prices.
@ RichardW,
Can't say I've ever noticed any fuses on top of the battery, the battery is under a plastic cover, are the fuses under the cover?
Any idea where the relay will be?
I'm just gathering the info I need before I start fault finding why it's not working.
Cheers.

Got that Richard - it doesn't list item 2 under the parts section for that VIN though - just 1 & 3 oddly enough.RichardW wrote:Looks like it's fed off fuse 12 on the board on top of the battery.

Re: C4 1.6HDI - Auxiliary electric heater?
These resistive (often PTC) heaters can mop up huge amounts of current. There is a bank of three on our Toyota D4D, each one switched with its own 50amp relay and fuse. Ours come into operation if the coolant temperature is below about 10degC, and the heater control is wound up to near maximum. Warm air from the vents is produced in less than a minute. As the engine warms up, the heater elements switch out of circuit one by one.
Fitted usually only to diesels, because, going downhill, they can burn almost no fuel, and hence take 'forever' to warm up. Petrols are not hampered by such frugality, I believe.

Re: C4 1.6HDI - Auxiliary electric heater?
Marc - I think it's one or the other, depending on whether it's got climate or not; I expect one is a resistor pack and the other a transistor based one.
Buck - I think the relay is integral; there are 5 wires to the unit: power, earth, 2 command wires, and one from the BSI I am not sure of! Yes, there appear to be fuses under the plastic cover over the battery.

Re: C4 1.6HDI - Auxiliary electric heater?
They seem to be fairly standard in application on common rail diesels, my C5 had it and so have my three 406s. It does indeed use some current, I would estimate by the heat output at least a kilowatt so you are looking at a consumption of something in excess of 100 amps. The amazing thing is that all the cars were 15 years old and the aux heating still worked.
Have you actually checked the element to see if it is o/c because I have not known of one fail and one of the cars had done 246k miles.
