A question about working on electric seats

Post by elma »

Today I wish to tackle the non functional buttons on the drivers seat of my Xantia. Do I have to disconnect the battery before I start work? I'm not really sure how the pre tensioner system works but I'd hate to accidentally ground it. I will likely need to remove the seat, does this involve waiting 10mins with battery out then disconnecting the pretensioners or is there a different process?

Any work on the Airbag / Pre-tensioner system should be left until the battery has been disconnected for at least 2 minutes for the ECU capacitor to discharge - but I would suggest at least 10 minutes to be sure James.

They recommend not using an ohmmeter on the pyrotechnic devices and the pre-tensioners should only be held by the body, not by the buckle, or the metal cable. Good Luck :-D

I've always tried to leave anything SRS related at least half an hour to be extra safe, but I do believe people "get away" with 10 mins or less so that should be sufficient. And, whether it's relevant or not, I avoid touching any of the electrical connectors in case of static discharge.

Thanks guys, seats fixed now. Was just dirty contacts so they didn't have to come out in the end.
