C5 fuel filter question

Post by hirsty »

My C5 has had the fuel filter removed and a throwaway cartridge type installed by the previous owner. I believe this is allowing fuel to run back to the tank causing difficult starting. Does the standard filter setup incorporate a non return valve?

It can only be running back if something is taking its place in the filter. Usually this is air which means that there is an airleak between the filter and the HP pump.

Which type of injection system is fitted to your car? If it's Bosch then there is an in-tank LP pump and I would expect there to be a fair bit of fuel being forced out somewhere between said filter and HP pump.

If your car has Siemens injectors then there is only a squeezy bulb to prime the HP pump if you run out of fuel and then I would expect only a slight leakage of fuel. It would also make it doubly difficult for the engine as it would first of all have to suck enough fuel through to get rid of the air.

I assume it's Bosch as I have no squeezy bulb and have a large plastic cover under the backseat with wires leading to what looks like the fuel tank. There are no visible leaks from under the car and no smell within.

Your car probably has Bosch injection (check name on IP) like mine. With this system I have the Siemens type filter housing. It has the round gasket filter.
You can get a housing from scrap car maybe? I mean the filter is only about 8 quid . Best to keep things standard.
