Timing a 1.4hdi

Post by xsaras4ever »

Hello to all.

have a bit of problem with a 1.4hdi.

We are doing an engine swap and will be using the original flywheel. We will also be using the original injection pump.

Before stripping it down we checked the timing, the engine turns over fine but with the camshaft sprocket in the correct place , the flywheel locking hole does not line up. However, this flywheel does not have a locating dowel and the bolt holes are not spaced in an offset way, so you could easily unbolt the flywheel and put it back in any of 6 positions.

Our question is - any fail-safe way of timing the crank to the camshaft without using the flywheel locking method (can't tippex the original belt as we have now removed it).

Maybe removing an injector and finding TDC ????

Also , as its common rail, why does the injection pump have timing marks ?

Thanks in advance

Where are you trying to time it? If it's the same as the 1.6.... The hole in the engine back plate above the exhaust is only for undoing the pulley bolt; not timing it. There is a slot(?) in the crank pulley that you use to time the engine.

I honestly can't remember a lot about this as that engine was new when I left.

The backplate hole is as Richard had said purely to lock the crank so you can undo the pulley.

The 'timing' location is either a plug in the front of the block you take out and insert a pin to contact a crank web or a hole in the pulley area itself, I think the former but as I say I'm not 100%

Hello to all and thanks for the help - absolutely bang on - forgot about the tiny hole at the front. =D> =D>

Problem solved. :-D

The stupid thng is that we read Autodata, but read it like a person who has done loads of other PSA engines - saw the "lock the flywheel hole" and thought "great", same as the starter hole on the XUD9. Didn't read any further !!!!!

On top of that, we timed a 1.4hdi in 2014, but in the space of 2 years we completely forgot about the timing at the front of the crank - getting old !!!

Thanks Again.

Hello again,

another question.

The BOSCH Injection pump we removed had a timing hole at 12 o'clock, the BOSCH pump that is going back on has the casting at 12 o'clock but no hole in it, so you cannot time the injection pump.

We thought that the pump didn't need to be timed anyway on the common rail systems.

Any ideas ?

It does not need timing as its just a pressure pump. :)

I know what you mean. It does actually (apparently) line up after about 12 or 18 (ish) turns when its all belted up though. Bit difficult to explain but if it was all assembled (belt on etc) and you turned it over and over stopping each time the cam hole was in place, eventually you'd find that the pump hole was in place too. I'm not sure of its purpose.

:)
Andy.

Hello Spider , yep , we timed it up with the pump looking like it was at 12oclock/6o clock and its looking good. Turned it over about 12 times and all came back into place. Might get it back in to the xsara over the weekend , more likely next week. Then of course instead of starting it will throw up another problem - if our luck is anything to go by.

Thanks again
