Dashcam advice needed ...

Post by superloopy »

It's been one of those days today ... driving to my mothers house I spent the time talking with my wife about needing to refit my headlamp protectors and purchase a dashcam cos there's so much going on on the roads today. She showed complete disinterest until we ventured on a different approach to my mothers house to be met with a young whippersnapper in a Corsah who decided to pull out directly in front of us from a side junction with next to no braking time for me to react. Needless to say HIS car came off worse, drivers door badly squashed but no-one the worse for wear. Me ... just my OSF lights gone awol, bumper looks not too bad in the dim light of evening :) . When questioned he said he 'couldn't see around the parked caravan and 4x4 tow car so just went for it' .... what can i say. But ... and here's the spooky bit, when asked for his name he replied 'Joe Th*****n', the very same name of my mothers partner who we were on our way to visit and just some 2mins away!!. So ... back on-topic, I need a dashcam, anyone got any good experiences at reasonable cost?

I have got one like this;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2016-Dash-Cam ... SwpDdVRRMp

This is a later generation from mine. It is not very large (can be hidden from drivers' view behind the rear view mirror, so not distracting), and can be slid off the mount easily. I would get a large capacity MicroSD card for it.

We have a nextbase 302. Just a basic dash cam but does what it says on the box. Have had it around 8 months and no problems with it.

Make sure you get an HD one. If you ever need it to use for proof, you'll be glad it's HD. Also - and not that it might effect you - they're not necessarily admissible as evidence if used abroad. They can, however, be used against your own insurer if they're failing to do their job properly..... guess how I know that ? :-D

There's a similar post in the Peugeot section: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=56270

FWIW I would suggest a setup with two separate cameras and as large an SD (or SD Micro) card as it will take. 32MB is as small as you want to go but it may also be as large as can be accepted.

I also run my camera in as high a definition as it will go - in my case 1280 x 720.
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

saved down to 720 for YouTube, but you can still see how it copes with Low Sun, dark shadows etc...

Thanks all. I quite like the idea of the ddpai which hasnt got a screen upfront , depending on your phone for its control. That could be a contender but i'm also thinking that a rear cam is equally necessary these days. Would like a 'swinger' so's i could police the 'mobile phone fanatics' by giving them a fright on overtaking. You'd have their plate and a nice side view to present to plod as 'evidence' [emoji39]

Got one of these, not bothered with cheap ones from the bay as I need it to be reliable when needed. This is good as it has a filter over the lense to stop glare. The screen I set to show speed and a compass.

In the rear I do have a cheap £20 eBay special.

Can i quickly ask ... does the front grille need to come off to remove the headlamp assembly and if so how? Cant see any bolts, just a pair of what looks like pop fittings on the top panel.

If does need to come off those two fittings you've seen need the centres lifting up about a centimetre. There are also two torx bolts in the sides of the top two air holes.
I don't think it does need to come off though. If I'm remembering correctly the headlights are secured by torx bolts at the top and bottom, just behind where the glass meets the plastic. They should be accessed from the front through the gap between the headlamp and car.

To remove the headlamps the grill trim does need to come off.

The top plastic (reusable) pop rivets, pop out the indicators (release clip, slide out), remove screws at the outside (under indicators), remove the two hidden screws in the grill intake area then remove the pop rivets from the top. Two bolts on top and one under the box releases the headlamp.

Got it all loosened but how do you get to the connectors on the rear without stripping the whole front, ecu box etc, any tips?

I do that as I slide the headlamp box forward......removing the headlamps is how I change bulbs :)
