CITROEN C5 X7 3.0HDI Auto Box Correct Oil
Hope someone can help please - I want to do a fluid change on the autobox on my recently acquired C5 3.0HDI & my query relates to the correct oil for the transmission. I did a similar job on my previous 2.7 which I understand has the same Aisin Warner AM6 transmission & the correct oil spec for this was JWS 3309, available from well known supplier Opie Oils as a Mobil branded product. My local Citroen workshop were very helpful in confirming that the oil spec for the later 3.0HDI fitted with the same transmission(AM6-2 ATF6) is now AW-1 (for the Euro 5 version' which my car is) Part Number 9734R7........issue? This stuff costs £86 + Vat for a 2 litre bottle & I know the box takes only three litres after draining - so you'd have to buy two packs from Citroen to do the job!!!
Opie Oils offer a Motul branded fluid which does detail Peugeot Citroen spec AW-1 in its specification description at £12.95 per litre!!.....my question is, why Citroen list two different fluids for the same transmission - is it correct that JWS 3309 for the Euro 4 version is a mineral based oil whereas AW-1 for the Euro 5 version is synthetic base & hence the high price? Surely Citroen don't make this oil, it must be supplied from one of the main lubricant producers? - Is the later Euro 5 spec oil simply there to aid the lower Co2 emissions on the later drivetrain?

will follow with interest Davy, as my aisin may be same as yours..
It is well overdue a change!
I don't quite follow how auto fluid relates to emissions, am I missing something or is it about drag and fuel use and ticking some box....

Hi John - I mentioned the oil spec in relation to emissions as I seem to recall reading somewhere that the oil used for the Euro 5 versions had lower friction properties.......I'm sure someone on this excellent forum will have the answer!!

Re: CITROEN C5 X7 3.0HDI Auto Box Correct Oil
The 2.7 HDi does indeed use JWS3309 fluid whereas the 3.0 HDi uses JWS3324 fluid. I've read online you can use JWS3324 in a 2.7 but you CANNOT use JWS3309 in a 3.0, however Citroen specify different oils for both so I wanted one that only said it did 1 job and wasn't a "bit of both".
Citroen retail the fluid at £93 for 2 litres...!
I used Carlube fluid in mine, I know another member has used it in his 3.0 HDi C6 and tows a caravan with it without any issues. It's bottled and has JWS3324 written on the bottle so it has to meet the standard for them to be able to sell it. It might not last as long as some of the more expensive fluids but I've decided that I'm going to do a 3 litre change every year when I service my C5 and 407 Coupé.
I've done 3 x 3 litre changes on our C5 in the last 3k miles and the difference was noticeable, more so on the 1st change, the 2nd and 3rd weren't as noticeable. The fluid that came out of ours at 65k was very thin and water like so I'm glad it came out. I've done 1 change on the 407 so far as I've been short of time.
The torque converter holds 7 litres or thereabouts and you can't drain it all, hence doing 3 x 3 litre changes.
Here's a link to the oil I bought:
https://www.gsfcarparts.com/parts/trans ... ission-oil
Spec Sheet:
http://www.carlube.co.uk/transmission-f ... sion-fluid
If you register on the website you will get an email from GSF every Friday that contains a weekend discount code. I bought my oil when it had a 43% discount on it so it made a substantial difference to the price. The discount is almost always over 40%, last weekend it was 47%.
My annual service routine now includes all the filters, engine oil and 3 litres of gearbox oil. It's worth it for piece of mind in my eyes!
** ANYONE ELSE READING THIS, PLEASE NOTE THAT THE INFORMATION I'VE GIVEN IS WHAT I BELIEVE TO BE CORRECT FOR THE 2.7 AND 3.0 HDI AFTER DOING MY OWN RESEARCH, PLEASE DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH IF YOU HAVE A DIFFERENT ENGINE!! **

Great David....thanks for the information - Opie Oils sell a Motul ATF with Aisin Warner spec AW-1/JWS3324 at around £12.95 p/litre before Citroen Car Club discount.....I think I'll try this as I've used Opie Oils before on the previous C5/C6 & XM/Xantia V6's that needed very specific transmission fluids.

It's worth adding to David Hallworth's excellent note that the Citroen Service website will show the correct oil for a specific car's gearbox, if you enter your VIN number, to be 100% certain.
Anomalies exist, for example the oil was changed during the production run of C6 2.2HDi auto.
Early cars had one oil (JWS3309), then from a certain build date a different oil was used (JWS3324).
This was to change the oil's frictions properties to help reach new exhaust emissions standards, Euro 4 to Euro 5, in this example.

Re: CITROEN C5 X7 3.0HDI Auto Box Correct Oil
I used the Carlube oil (ATF-LV, AW-1 graded) but I gave up trying to buy it from GSF and given the service I had from them last time I'll never use them again.
I bought mine from here:
https://www.bullseyecarparts.co.uk/cate ... id-1-litre
The price was excellent and the oil arrived perfectly packaged within 24 hours.

Re: CITROEN C5 X7 3.0HDI Auto Box Correct Oil
Thanks to Shaun for the clarification.....I did believe that the change in oil spec related to the Euro 5 emissions standard - my local Citroen workshop person was correct in confirming the correct oil for my C5 as being Aisin Warner AW-1/JWS 3324 - Part No 9734R7.....still can't understand why Citroen charge such a high price for this fluid!!!!!! Opie Oils it is then.............

Re: CITROEN C5 X7 3.0HDI Auto Box Correct Oil
chaps could anyone translate this into something I can buy ?
have I even got useful ID? seems the same as Davy's
9734 R7
01 OIL
AW1 BOITE AM6-2/AT6
it's not from my car, but the same engine in a pug.. sounds like I will need JWS3324..
John
edit
its a minefield! I have never bought auto tranny fluid before, except an old chevy.. I found an ebay link for an Opie product but that specifies the other JWS number.. may just follow Lenny's link..

You could run your car's details (or similar model) through the various lubricant advisor websites and try and get a consensus of opinion !!

Re: CITROEN C5 X7 3.0HDI Auto Box Correct Oil
In answer to jgra1's question - if you search Opie Oils for Aisin Warner AW-1,it brings up three possible transmission oils....I went for the MOTUL brand which if you read the detailed 'specifications' tab, does list AW-1 under Citroen/Peugeot & also JWS 3324 under Lexus approved fluids ....it is fully synthetic & should be fine as is specifically lists AW-1 & JWS 3324 standards. Hope this helps..........

Re: CITROEN C5 X7 3.0HDI Auto Box Correct Oil
Hi everyone, I've completed the auto box fluid change with the oil obtained from Opie Oils on the 3.0HDi.....I now need to reset the oil wear counter & auto adaptive memory(have been advised this is desirable).......can anyone advise the correct Lexia procedure/screens - I've found the oil wear counter tabs in the menu options but am not sure how to actually reset it.....one tab when clicked displays a numerical value & the other Lexia tab talks about re-writing the value into a new ECU' IF THE GEARBOX OIL HAS NOT BEEN CHANGED....' I don't want to do anything which could corrupt the ECU. I could not find any mention of the adaptive memory reset option.....the main Lexia options which I think might be relevant are under the headings ' Repair' and/or 'Maintenance' .....thanks in anticipation!!! - David.
Re: CITROEN C5 X7 3.0HDI Auto Box Correct Oil
SUCCESS !!!! After some experimenting I located the correct section/tab to complete this task...it is in 'Replacement Parts' - there is a specific tab for automatic gearbox oil replacement which when followed through, takes you to the oil wear counter reset procedure....this is actually quite simple to follow on the Lexia & I've completed the steps and then checked the oil counter, which is now indicating 0.....it was previously circa 22000.
