Rough idling

Post by scott beeland »

Hi everyone. My 1st post on this forum.
I've just got a 99T Xantia TD LX. 60K miler ex company car.
Problem I have is...On start up the 1st 5 seconds or so of idle are very rough; with engine speed of about 8-900 rpm. Settles down on its own to tick over at about 1k rpm. Runs fine otherwise.
Any ideas??

Are the glowplugs all working - sounds as though one or two may have failed? The other possibility is a little air getting in with the fuel and causing misfiring until it clears.

These later 1.9td's with ECU can go absolutely ape at idle with just one plug down, they don't simply missfire and throb as is usual with the earlier ones, they rev and die constantly until the temperature gets up and they start firing unaided.
Its all because of electronic injection timing, it tries to compensate for the missing cylinder(s) and advance the timing, then it has to go in the other direction and retard it as the good cylinders fire, it simply can't cope and makes a right balls of it.
A new set of plugs will have it running as sweet as a nut, just make sure they are Beru GN 013 or the Bosch equivelent.
