Thats ok Jim.

Did a live feed (fused of course).

Went for another spin (in the dark now) and went past the magic 4km, then the magic 8km, getting more confused - then it died at 9.9km - pump still whirring away in the back. Would not restart.

Disconnected live feed - ignition on - pump primed - started first time.

Reconnected live feed , booted it, ran for 2.5km.

Live feed disconnected, started it again, re-connected live feed - home the 6.7km with no drama.............

It's a very good call but also very, very much like my death-trap 207...

Do you see anything odd happen to the instruments, warning lights and dash illumination when it cuts out?

If the tacho suddenly dies it may indicate power loss to the engine ECU perhaps...

Does the radio keep working?

Hi Jim , its a builders-van .

Its a miracle we can hear the pump above the din of all the tools and supplies in the back - the passengers side is unusable because of the sandwich wrappers, drinks bottles , pencils and screwdrivers and there might be a radio hiding behind all the little notes sticking out of the ashtray...............

The only odd thing about the dash (after we wiped the layers of dirt off) is that the little orange engine symbol is lit.

When we clear the faults on the Lexia, this light goes out - but reappears when the van stalls. Surprisingly, when the van restarts the symbol stays lit...

Thanks for the help though - we dont mean to be cheeky with the reply - its just that you made us laugh....

I know vans like that... And cars too... You should see my daughter's cars ;)

They look like a skip that's been parked outside McDonalds for a week!

What faults is Lexia reporting? That may help to shed a little light...

I'd still take the pump out to give it a good look over but if the light goes out then, as RichardW says, that means that electrical supply has been discontinued by the ECU for one reason or another. This is almost the exact same situation that I had and I gave up looking for a solution as I was wasting too much time trying to do it the proper way.

I wonder if the pump is worn and producing some pressure but not enough once the van gets going with some revs on, so it dies. Prime it up, enough pressure to start then dies again. Just a thought.

OK. If I have got it right we are dealing with the 2.0L HDI 8 Valve engine with Bosch injection. This fault is typical of a clogged filter on the pressure regulator. The best solution is to change the regulator. One symptom often overlooked is a slight tendency for the engine to run on for a fraction of a second after the ignition is turned off. Another diagnostic method is to remove the regulator and examine it with a good magnifying glass. The filter can be cut off.
This topic has been covered previously on this forum.
There is also a possibility of it having a regulator without a filter. There more commonly caused starting problems. Still I would be inclined to blame the regulator.

Hello to all - problem now solved - or appears to be for the moment !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

180 km achieved , no cut-out.

Took out tank , removed pump , took pump apart and cleaned pancake filter on bottom of pump - sorry to previous poster when we doubted there was a pre-filter. We had forgotten what the pump looked like exactly , now we remember.

Also drained tank and cleaned it. Found some plastic in it - seems that filler cap was drilled out at some stage.

A huge thank you to all who helped and showed a keen interest.

JIM - hope this helps with your car - taking the tank out wasn't too bad, less than an hour.

Excellent news :D Delighted it's fixed!

I've seen some very bunged-up filters in the past but always in more elderly 1.9TDs previously running on veg...

Thanks folks.

One less brick in our ruck-sack.

Now just the Peugeot 406 BSI fault, the Laguna "Battery Charge" fault and the non starting Megane after "Injection Fault" to fix.

Just look at that - all electrics based problems - this must be why we love our old tractor so much - it doesn't even have glow-plugs.....and it starts by pushing a lever which bridges 2 terminals on the starter - easy peasy......

I have never had a new car in my life, the nearest I came was a 1980 Cortina estate I had in '82, although I was tempeted with a new FC Victor estate, those lovely soft seats and curved windows making it seem so roomy inside, I seem to remember it was about £650.00 but I decided we couldn't really afford it, this would have been in the '60s.

Not only have I never been able to afford a new car but I would regard it as a liability, they weren't difficult to repair in those days but I would have been scared to drive it in case I damaged it and the insurance was pretty steep, also it would have deprived me of the fun of all those diesel conversions I did.
