Hi all;
driving to work this morning felt clutch pedal grate slightly then it went to the floor. got it back up and now its solid. any idea's
could it be clutch gone or fluid prob with seals?

I would think most likely would be a failing master cylinder unless you are loosing fluid.

If there is a hose going from MC to slave cylinder, you could put a brake clamp or similar on it. If you then have pressure on clutch pedal, you know the MC is good and your probs are further down the chain. It may not be feasible with C5, I don't know. It used to be a trick on older cars with conventional master and slave cylinders.

I'm not sure I understand the question, when you say "and now its solid" do you mean you can't push it down at all or that it's back to working correctly after a one off drop to the floor?TrojanL200 wrote:Hi all;

If the pedal is solid i.e. you can't push it down then it's likely the release bearing has gone through the pressure plate fingers and the slave cylinder piston it at its extreme and nowt wrong with the hydraulics.

seems second part of your reply was correct. now I am wondering is it worth the £400 repair price. Maybe not so I may be advertising bits on here for sale as it has plenty of good bits that can be salvaged ( help pay for replacement vehicle) lol. Thanks for answer

You can probably buy another car with a good clutch for that money. I bought my last 406 Hdi estates for £400 and £350 respectively and I believe they both have had new clutches, I know one has but the pedal feels just as good on the other one.

Sounds to me like the clutch arm has broke and the slave cylinder has not returned this will give you the solid pedal. The gearboxes are not hard to take out once you remove all the bits out the way. I put a new clutch in my one last year took about 5hours the clutch kit was not that much but I don't have a dual mass set up in my c5 hpi

There's got to be more room to swing a spanner in the C5 engine bay compared to the pug 206 & I managed the clutch job on that single handed so shouldn't be too bad. Even the gearbox was light enough to use a trolley jack and bit of rope wrapped round a pickaxe handle to shift it back in on my own. Was expecting to struggle with that but didn't, lack of the usual spigot bearing is likely a bonus there. DMF (if fitted) is likely the only sticking point if it's worn as well.
