And it'd mean any money you spent on the Estate wouldn't be a total loss if the rot is as bad as you fear

I don't think there will be many parts shared between an s1 white 1. 9td estate and a blue s2 hdi saloon will there...

Plus the mot on the current xantia runs out in December, so a while to keep 2 cars. Plus I only have on road parking, so keeping 2 will be an issue.

The laguna will be a wonderful place to waft to work and back in, and is slightly cheaper. But it would also be a lovely place to sit on the side of the road whilst I wait for the aa...

Whereas the xantia has 4 very new tyres, is full of hydraflush with a boot full of lhm and is in Mauritius blue, which I love, was the colour of my old xm!

Both require collection adventures though. And the xantia is winning. I do like Xantias, have wanted to own one for a while, it's just my current one isn't worth the money spending, by me anyway. It'll do someone a turn until the test runs out (and possibly the one after as the rot didn't feature much on the advisories), but ive sunk money into a rust bucket before (my old Ford puma), I'm not doing it again.

Car take back will apparently give me £150 for it, so it'll be sold for that to someone who will make use of it either as a runner or for spares. To be confirmed though, ill let Jim laugh at it on Monday but at least I'll be able to tell the next person to have their name on the v5 what is wrong.

Xantia is winning atm, I just don't think I'm at the right stage in my life to own a modern renault...

Got to be worth more than a ton fifty, even if it is tatty as all hell. Is it a shame you're so far away or is it a good thing? (probably good, as far as my relationship goes, or I'd have likely jumped on it for a parts hauling hack!)

I need to go northward for collectioning my new steed, either Cheltenham for the gooner or the lake District for the xantia (or Aberdeen if I went to his house). If your en route, delivery is no issue as it would save me a train fare!

Its an ideal parts hack. Do the small things to get it running ok then just drive it until it either won't pass another mot or explodes!

If your going to Aberdeen to pick up a car check flight prices from your nearest airport. I paid £56 to fly to Manchester on Monday with Flybe, and next week when I deliver the activa to Essex easy jet from Luton to Aberdeen is £33. Trains are horrendous prices in comparison and I'd rather sit an hour in an airport and an hour in a plane than 8 or 9 hours in a train, often tithe 2 or 3 changes.

I'm only 40 miles from that xantia, but it's not one for me to consider. I am going to be on the lookout for another bigger citroen to replace the Leon once the activa has gone but it must be an auto and preferably 6 cylinders [emoji4]

I need to look at flying if I go up, but I have a few other option, one of which involves having it delivered to me and driving the person who bought it over to Uxbridge.

I may still go for the gooner yet. My boss/best mate at work is looking for a new family bus, and has come across phase 2 megane 2.2dci's... We are thinking of going for them and seeing how bad it could possibly be. But as it was him who said it would be a good idea, and him I would call if I had an ftp on the way to work, I can blame him!

Can't say I'm not excited about the idea of a car with lots of toys, never had a top spec car with lots of buttons before. Of course how many work on any one day remains to be seen...

Well decision made, mainly by the seller reducing the price a fair bit just because it's in the way, I am changing cars, and getting rid of the xantia!

It won't be scrapped if I can help it though, Someone I know with a S1 White Estate with a 1.9td engine did jokingly say when I first got it to let him know if I ever sold it, so I've given him the heads up. His needs an exhaust funnily enough... Yet to hear back from him though

Then, just now the bloke I'm getting my new car off asked how much I was asking as he could do with a tip run car for a few weeks. Wish he had asked that before I messaged this other bloke, as that would make collection much easier, but hey ho, I told him I was waiting for a decision first.

If neither of them want it then I'll offer up here and elsewhere as a cheap, MOT'd until december car, and will find out what it needs to make it run a bit better after seeing Jim on Monday so the new owner can tinker.

Either way, R499AMV's time with me will soon be over. Wish I knew this before getting the new tyres fitted, but hey ho, it's one of those things!

I will miss her, I have always wanted a Xantia, it's just the one I have is a bit beyond my skill set (I can't weld for a start), and one should never pass up a free car, no matter how modern it is!

The Xantia has found a new home! Someone in the autoshite community, who I know better through vacuum cleaner collecting has an S1 White 1.9td estate that needs an exhaust, pipework and a few other bits. It also skipped it's cambelt in almost the same way mine did. So I gave him first refusal on it, and he has taken me up, so he should be able to make one good one out of mine and his. He can weld though, so he said he would have both over the pit and see which one is better. Plus he can at least drive mine about rather than use his work van whilst he gets started!

So based on that, Jim, if you would rather have your Monday back to do whatever it is retired people do on a Monday, that's fine by me! I'll clear the xantia out and give it a final wash, then drive it all week for work as I'm not picking my new car up until next weekend!

I'll probably have another Xantia at some point, but with my one's galloping arch rot, and me not being the richest man in the world, and being offered a free car, I'm cutting my losses now before I really start to spend on it!

One should never pass up a free car, indeed nor should one pass up a free anything if said anything has an engine/wheels or both... Sounds like a fair price even for an automatic Laguna lol

Absolutely :)

Good to hear the Xantia has found a destiny Sam...

Yes, likely best to skip Monday... It will be a busy day for me as given how busy this weekend is with various activities I'll be up to my ears batch-cooking, baking and generally getting ready for the rest of the week. Trouble is I'm not fully retired yet and still have to work three days a week...

How I ever found time to work a full week I really have no clue...
