There's definitely a fault, so don't use the car unnecessarily - it's designed to allow you to get moving at a lower speed to help you get to a garage for example - but I wouldn't push it if I were you.

Not a light car for sure! Best of luck - I would get it to a Citroen dealer in this instance, as they'll have all the kit to give you a full diagnostic. :-D

Have 100% no confidence in Citroen dealers after my pump fiasco but to only have this problem manifest itself 3 times in 8mths can't be terminal its just frustrating. My local mechanic can't see it till monday so will have to drive the car carefully till than!

I would take an automatic gearbox falling into limp mode seriously. Even if its "only" done it 3 times in 8 months. Until the fault codes have been read everyone can only speculate on the severity or cause of the problem.

If you're not keen on Citroen dealers are there any forum members in your area with a Lexia that would be willing to scan for fault codes ?

Something to keep in mind too is that some types of temporary fault codes will eventually erase themselves after X number of starts without a fault re-occurring. So if you leave it too long you may lose an important clue as to what the problem may be.

I will get my local mechanic who has Lexia to have a look on monday but i think the engine stalling while in Drive is the main problem and not doing the gearbox any good.I need it sorted but no mechanic will say that X will cost so much or Y will cost extra and will sort it 100%.

hi Aero, sorry haven't read everything, but for what its worth .....

My X7 auto had some electrical issues , occasionally.. when these happened the dash lit up with handbrake, central locking and other issues.... made me panic, and on some occasions the gearbox would lock out into 3rd! horrible to change from P to 3 or R !!

later in the day, car would be fine, all errors gone..
so, your gearbox issue may not be a gearbox issue.. mine seems a red herring based on some other* fault

I am not saying for a second yours has no gearbox problem, just my experience of how mine faults when everything else faults !!

* my issue was clicking from somewhere in the dash, console.. almost stalling.. and all the error messages.. also the HD and sat nav would keep rebooting (this was the first sign of doom)
I don't know what is wrong with mine, but have removed some interior panels, and no more clicks, gearbox faults, sat nav rebooting or error messages !! don't ask me ;)

Thinking about it problem has only occurred when in 1st gear and crawling in traffic, sometimes the gearbox would drag as in not release when i came to a stop.I would'nt say the gearbox is jerky but you can tell when changes occur so was thinking of doing a partial fluid change (1 litre) and see if the fluid smells burnt and make sure it is not black,Just need to know how to access the filler and/or drain plug now.
Have read that the box uses synthetic fluid so will pop to Halfords later. The car drove faultless this morning and no fault messages on dash, thanks for all the helpful advice chaps.

Be very careful which fluid you use - I don't know about the specific box in your X7 but the AL4 and 4HP20 are very picky about the fluid and only Esso - now rebranded to Mobil LT 71141 is suitable.

There are a lot of previous posts covering this.
