Easy HDI Xantia Water pump change
Hi folk,
Is it possible to fit a new water pump without locking the crank and removing the auxiliary belt?
I mean, could I simply remove the top cover timing belt cover and release the tensioner, then fit a new water pump?
Thanks
John

I don't think so, because the water pump is under the lower cover which needs the pulley removing, and in any case you will need to remove the timing belt, and I doubt you can do that with the crank pulley in place (well, not without wrecking the lower cover anyway).

That's what I suspected. OK, I'll start on the preparation strip down straight away.
Thanks Richard.

Re: Easy HDI Xantia Water pump change
It's not too hard a belt to change - the 90 is easier than the 110 as there is less in the way at the top.

I've commenced... its just getting round to it that takes most time!

Change the cambelt, aux. belt, jockeys and tensioners whilst you are there John
Shame not to whilst all is in bits and given they all have to be removed to get at the water pump anyway...
False economy not to.

Righto. Definitely will Jim.
By the way, is the TDC on the flywheel found approximately, when a small hole on the crankshaft pulley faces Straight up (in relation to the engine at its slant), on the HDI ?

Re: Easy HDI Xantia Water pump change
you normally lock the crank off with a pin at the flywheel end, theres a hole it will slot through and into the block, and then there should be a hole you can put a bolt into for the cam. the pumps don't need locking off thankfully (unlike the older diesels)

Timing point for the cam pulley is at 7 o'clock, this should match with the timing hole in the flywheel....obviously!

Of course, I realised just after I posted... I don't need to align the crank first, align and lock off the cam shaft and then just stick pin the crankshaft, as it will be ready aligned, assuming I haven't removed the cam belt. So, timing covers off first.
Is it OK to yank free the crank pulley nut with the flywheel pinned, do you reckon? I can't loosen it with car in gear.

Bodgey way of doing it is brace the breaker bar against the floor then crank the car on the starter (WITH LOCKING PINS REMOVED FROM CAM AND FLYWHEEL!!) which should force the bar into the floor and crack the bolt off.

Re: Easy HDI Xantia Water pump change
Got the top covers off - much easier than the XUD, I have to say, getting at the cover bolts!
Too late for the starter motor method - I've pulled mine out of the way. I'm going to wedge the flywheel and use a socket and breaker. ... Which worked nicely with a short piece of strong tube over a t-bar (i.e. in order to get enough room for a turn, i couldn't use a long breaker bar) + a good old British forged masonry chisel as a wedge,
The rest should be straightforward.
The reason for the water pump change is that it is leaking - due no doubt to fans failing to come on in traffic, due to failed radiator fan motor.

I believe, when the engine is pinned for timing no pistons are actually at TDC but a little way down the cylinders to guard against valves potentially kissing piston crowns when work is in progress...

Re: Easy HDI Xantia Water pump change
SO I seem to remember reading, now you mention it.
I've been looking for a threaded receiving hole to pin the camshaft, but can only find a hole without thread - perhaps the scheme of things changed for the HDI, so I ask Is this the right pin hole, any about 7 to 8 o clock?
Answer: Yep, that's it ... no longer a threaded hole to receive your 8mm pin, on the HDI.
