This "fog" won't wipe off when the window is cold though. It's as if you're looking through a very thick fog but it's purely on the outside of the glass. The wiper does reduce the thickness of the fog but does not wipe it away and it "re-fogs" in under 2 seconds since the last wipe. Utterly bizarre and I've seen nothing like it before.

I always use a proper glass cleaner to get the outside of the windscreen spotlessly clean, and then I apply Rain-X in a polishing style, leave it for 10 - 20 minutes, and polish off the residue. If I have time I might do a second coating. That works for me.
This is what I used - it's definitely screen wash additive:

I did use "proper" glass cleaner on the window only a couple of months ago so it should be clean. The fogging has only started since the Rain X screen wash was added... I think you're right Jim, I need to go back to good old methylated spirits to clean the glass - it's what I used to use years ago and always worked well - for some reason I don't have much luck with "proper" glass cleaners!!

Is there an easy way to drain the contents of the screen wash bottle so I can go back to some "normal" cheapy screen wash ? Or do I just have to squirt it all out ?

The Rain X kit I had contained 2 compartments, the first a thorough cleaner for the glass to get all the oils, muck and grease off, then apply the Rain x in several coats after; never had a fogging issue on the outside with it.

I remember that kit (I still have a bottle of glass cleaner left). The cleaner reminds me of Jif, thick white cream that (once you get the hang of it) got the windscreen so clean I had to go feeling for it.

That's the one James!
I think to be honest, that once your screen gets to the stage where it's very pitted, it won't matter what you put on as muck & grease will just end up in the fine holes and will probably wear away your wiper rubber! I tend replace mine when it gets to this stage as when sun is really bright, it accentuates and reflects all the micro holes and affects my eyes, so for the sake of £70 windscreen excess I think it's worth it.

That's all very well but I used the screen wash additive not the manual applicator kit and in the two years I have had the car I have never had any problems with the outside of the glass fogging up until I used this stuff. There's nothing wrong with the glass itself.

So I think the solution is to dump it out of the tank and put normal screen wash in, then clean the glass thoroughly with meths. Disappointing that an expensive screen wash has made such an arse of the job to the point where I literally can't see through the foggy layer on the outside of the glass until the window is warmed up a bit! Even if I try to manually wipe it with a cloth on the outside it doesn't clear the fog! [-X

Ahh, never used the additive - I just stick to the Halfrauds 5lt advanced and that never freezes in winter either. It will probably take a few goes to get all the residue off - a good glass cleaner will help - even that W2 stuff from Aldi does the house windows brilliantly.
