Hi,
This has been proven very difficult for me to find as every time I google this only the MK3 and above (2006+) information is being shown. I tried to google brochures for technical information however it only listed the 2.0 / 2.2 HDI and V6 specs for the auto, completely skipping the 2.0 EW10.
Can anyone confirm with certainty if the automatic in a MK1 2.0 Petrol C5 is a 4HP20 or a AL4?
Many thanks!

The 2.0 petrol C5 has AL4 for sure, doesn't matter if it's a MK1, 2 or 3.

Also the ZF 4HP20 was fitted to the C5 amongst other cars - here is Jim's guide on stripping and rebuilding the box: (bottom right of page are further links to photos and stripping it down)

I don't think the 4HP20 was ever used on any Citroen 2 litre petrol engines. It's designed for much higher torque levels.

I think they used it on the ES9 engine for the 3lt V6 Petrol, but can't seem to find any other references to the 2lt petrol as you say Simon. I think this box was also on some Xantias and XMs too - probably the higher end engines.

Thanks for all the replies
I am saddened some what however. My car has 26,000 miles on it, in prestige condition! Fully loaded spec, sunroof, HID, cruise, heated electric leather seats, satnav, everything!
I have been looking for a 3.0 V6 or a 2.2 HDI to replace this, in this condition, for a 'reasonable' price but I have failed.
So I wanted to increase the engine power instead of having to upgrade to another car but it seems this gearbox (AL4) can not handle anything over 200nm of torque which is already the output of the engine.
My idea was to do what many people do with the EW10 engine, and that is convert them into the 180bhp GTi spec, which is relatively easy.
I was really enthusiastic as I thought I had the 4HP20, which can handle in excess of 350nm of torque! Plus I have driven a 2.2 HDI auto for a long time and the gear changes are much smoother and more elegant in the 4HP20.
