noise turning steering wheel

Post by ricadao »

Hi,

I have a noise when I turn the steering wheel, after turning the engine on doing manoeuvres to start rolling, I don't know how to explain better.
When I bought the car last May (the car is a C5 HDi 2.0 from 12/2009), it was doing the same but the garage did a level check on all the fluids and the noise was gone! After two months, it started again. It looks like it lacks some lubrication somewhere on the steering wheel but as this took a couple of months to start all over again, I wonder if any one experienced the same issue (assuming you understand what I'm trying to describe).
When I'm rolling it stops, it's just something that happen when I start the car on each day.

Thanks

Hard to diagnose without hearing it really I'm afraid, noises can be one of the trickiest things to pin down via an internet post. However I'd suggest it could either be low power steering fluid (have you checked the levels again, bearing in mind that seemed to correct it last time?) or a slipping auxiliary belt.

Could you possibly describe the noise more definitively, or better still get a recording of it and post it on youtube so we can hear it ourselves. That'd be the best way to get a more accurate diagnosis.

Thank you for your suggestions.

The noise might not be loud enough to be caught by the phone but I will try. First, I will check the levels and will post it here as soon as I have it.

Ok, so finally it is getting any better (despite not quite worse) but I decided to check for fluid levels and Found out the Power Steering tank is empty. I guess there might be a leak somewhere as a check was made some 3000 kms ago.

Here's the question: While I check a good car service around my area - I live near Shankill, Dublin - I want to be able to refill the tank, I really don't like driving with empty tanks of any sort. I googled for "Citroen C5 HDi 2.0 160cv NAV+" for any sort of immediate fluid type and got Total LDS, Total DA, WYNN's POWER STEERING STOP LEAK 125ML, CARLUBE DCT-U 1L, CARLUBE MTF-U 75W-80 1L, and so on...
The user manual sends me to a Citroen dealer instead of giving the specs...

Any help? Is this something a good-but-not-official-dealer-service can easily do without ruining my car? It's a great great car but I'm having some issues with it. First, the DPF fluid, now this... I hope it's the last thing I get for the upcoming years

Thanks!

Does your C5 have Hydractive suspension (if it has height control buttons near the hand brake it has Hydractive)? If it does, then you will want LDS fluid, as the suspension and steering share the reservoir (and, obviously, the fluid).

I may be talking borlox here but I think the X7 has split systems James.

The real issue is why it was empty.

Trust Citroen to make a simple system (that worked well) complicated!

True of many things - I have a suspicion it is still LDS although the X7 has electric power steering - or at least an electric pump.

No hydractive suspension. Assuming it's not LDS fluid, which one should I use to fill in the reservoir, at least to give me sometime until the garage can take my car next week?

OK, so please accept my apologies, but I do not know what fluid Citroen use in their power steering system, but it could be worth checking on a car parts website (such as GSF or Euro Car Parts), as they might be able to help.

Hydractive X7s share the LDS fluid with the steering system - but there is either a separate electro pump or 3 types of coupled pumps. On the non hydractive - 'metallic' X7s, there is a small reservoir for the PS fluid.

If yours has metallic suspension, then it will be Total Fluide DA:
