I hope it is nothing to serious, mine gave a good bang and clonk a while back when the gearbox bolts had rattled loose,

well its confirmed it is the gearbox gone home.
just waiting for Pleiades to do the gearbox swap now.
was booked in for last Thursday but still haven't done it yet.
The CV failed on leaky gearbox oil seals contaminating the front brakes.
so that couldn't have been more catastrophic could it.
it didn't fail on what I thought it would fail on.

Sorry to hear about the CV fail Nigel... Is that a difficult job to resolve? I guess driveshafts out, new seals and a good clean up of the brakes...

Hope it's easy and soon sorted...

yes Jim same as a GS with inboard brake discs.
so up on stands, air filter housing out for access to top of engine
and brake callipers disks etc, driveshaft's out callipers off brake disks out
drive pinions out of gear box and fit new seals
the replacement is the opposite of the removal to quote the BOL.
and several broken fingers along the way (probably).
definitely backache to say the least. lean on the body of a CV and you'll dent it.

To do this on a 2CV Nigel, I'd recommened removing the wings and propping the bonnet as near vertical as you can get it. You'll have loads of space to work on it with the wheels off with it up on stands, it'll add about 5 mins to your job time and you can sit on a little stool while you work.

Unfortunately I find myself begging for help with either the local cv specialist
or Pleiades in cambs as Ive recently been diagnosed with Neuropathy
in my hands and feet (nerves dying, numbness, muscle weakness, severe pain).
The little CV is undercover on my Dads driveway at the mo.
waiting for help. if I can get her Mot'd i'll be considering selling her to someone more able
to keep her going as it very much looks like my driving license will shortly be revoked.

Terribly sad to hear you may loose your license Nigel :(

I can only assume this will compound your difficulties...

I really trust lots of people close to you step out and give you all the help they can and you need.

Hmm its nearly MOT time for the little 2cv and I just know its going to fail
on the offside rear breaking it always does.
fitted a brand new hub last year to get it through its test and it passed.
jacked it up yesterday to check all was ok and the hub was wobbling.
so I tried to tighten the hub ring nut and even with a half inch drive ratchet handle and a five foot long
steel pole I couldn't get enough pressure on it to tighten the dam thing up.
its going to need some thought this one.
Hub nut 44mm or the beaing retaining ring? New bearing in the hub?
you do have a proper long bar and a 44mm socket to do the hub nut up proper tight?

Gearbox -update & Xenon headlamp bulbs.

well the spare BE3 box has been in a couple of weeks now 300 miles or so and it
was a little tight to begin with so I drove the car carefully only doing 50 on the A14 on the way home 25 miles. 8-[
and for another three days before ramping up the speed.
The box had been devoid of oil sitting empty under a plastic sheet in my wooden shed with no
driveshaft stubs to retain the output gear in position for almost 3 years. 8-[
It seems a little looser now but I think the offside wheel bottom ball joint might have been cracked when the shafts were taken out.
as it has been clunking badly over the bumps. could be a drop link to. 8-[

Pleiades even said they didn't replaced the gearbox driveshaft seals as it was Friday night when they did the job
Surprisingly No leaks thus far I think that's pretty amazing to be honest, my heart sunk when they told me this. [-o<

The oil sump drain hole is in a different position apparently not at the bottom of the gearbox but other than that
it is coping well in my hilly area. I don't use third anymore as much as I did like an auto gear
I make sure I don't labour the box to much using the whole gear range more equally.
now dropping to second on corners instead of using third to go round corners.

My throttle spring setup on the 1.9TD actually closes the throttle down quickly
so this forces me to drop to second gear more frequently.
On a quarter tank of fuel I seem to have gained around 33 miles. :-D
whether this is the gearbox matching or my throttle spring because of the engine over revving
at idle in hot temperature weather I do not know but at the moment my priority
is to get the cam cover seal and o/s bottom ball joint some attention.

there has been a grinding noise from the off side occasionally when turning left from a standing start 8-[
and I am wondering if any damage occurred to the driveshaft when the old gearbox when bang.
The old box had a definite rattle to it when the shaft was turned manually once the box was out of the car.
as I said before the experience was climbing a 1 in 4 hill in third gear doing about 35 to 40 mph
Before a huge bag occurred which went right through the car, no apparent oil loss or damage to the gearbox casing.
(strange) the old box had its 2nd 3rd syncro replaced according to the history at 83K long before I owned the car
so it looks like the Box had issues all the while it did wine badly in 3rd gear and it was hard to get into 3rd in very cold weather.
I changed the gear oil about every 3 years and found some bits of metal on the magnet every time.
looks like the old box was breaking up slowly but surely, I added some ptfe treatment at each change
to.

I am hoping that the grinding noise has something to do with the bottom ball joint being out of kilter when turning left.
I shall ask Martin when the car goes back on the 9th for a new rocker cover seal and fog light bulbs.
loss of felling in my hands means I cannot locate the new bulbs in their lamp holders without them falling out or breaking as I put them
back inside the fog lamps Ive broken four new bulbs already attempting this, should have done it before attaching the new bumper (idiot) #-o

for anyone still using the old cheaper head lamp bulbs since my front end rebuild and the crash on my Birthday
in April 2016,
I can definitely recommend the Ring Automotive XenonUltima Category E road legal (make sure you ask for road legal up to 120% brighter).
bulbs for the headlamps at £24.95 for two they are expensive but wow what a difference to the headlamp beam
it is almost as bright as HID's they say up to 120% extra light and I would never have believed it until I took the plunge and
spent the extra money £50 for four of them. But I'm very glad I did. :)

There is something about the new led streetlights that seem to cancel out the old style headlamp beam
which makes it almost ineffective the Xenon bulbs bring back the beam and it is almost like driving
with your Xantia spot lights on all the time except the beam is much longer increasing the overall lit area
a remarkable difference to ordinary bulbs. :-D

regards Nigel.

question please?

does anyone know if the auto adjust clutch cables can be reset on the Xantia S2 please?
as my pedal seems a little to high and it hasn't adjusted properly
with a new clutch in the engine it seems to be way to high 3 inches above the brake pedal.
I seem to remember my last clutch cable being quite close to the floor when the clutch was new
a new cable was fitted when the clutch went in.
it was high at the time but adjusted its self perfectly after a few miles but now the box has been changed
the clutch pedal seems to high again. this is important as I have very long legs I've got a 35inch inside leg. #-o
(after thought) the pedal seems to have some slack travel in it before engaging the cable it doesn't engage immediately.
I think the slack needs to be taken up.

thanks in advance
Nigel.

Yes, it can (I have done so), but it helps to take it off the car.
