XM Indicator stalk

Post by Fake Concern »

Last week as I picked up daughter no 1 to take her to Gatwick indicator stalk got stuck in centre position, but with indicators going and smoke started to come out of the steering column cowl. Took daughters car to airport so that was ok. When we got back to the XM I managed to wiggle the stalk so the indicators didn't keep going and drive home not using them (jokes about pretending to drive BMW/Audi etc). I've taken the stalk apart & except the detent bullet looks a bit worn I can't see a problem. I've filed the bullet a bit and greased it up, but each time I put it back together it works once then gets stuck again.

Anyway as I can't get the thing going, does anyone have a spare working stalk I can buy?

Forgot to say I could see no sign of burnt wiring etc

Thanks for that.
I was hoping I wouldn't have to buy a new (read expensive) one as I paid about what the car is worth in order to pass the MOT a couple of months back!

I'd already perused Citronut's treasure trove & not found it.

Try the part number and description on Ebay sites - but you'll get every sort of PSA lightswitch, so hopeless is Ebay's search function. The Chinese are making these items now.

Think there was have been a design change at some point.
All XM typres have flat "paddle" stalk (rather than the more common PSA/Euro round one), but some seem to have the Off/Side/Head slide switch on the front surface, others don't.

A photo of which one you're after would help, F.C., as your signature is a bit vague on vintage.

I am 95% sure that the changes all occurred in the S1 and all S2 switches are the same.

Good idea (for some reason it won't link direct to the pic)

OK, that's the late-type switch - S2, to end of production, all engine types.

Thank you. A new one has just come on to ebay for £75 so I suppose £30 sounds about right if you would ask your friend and assuming it is the correct one.
