Timing belt 06 C5 136 bhp hdi

Post by boristhespie »

The garage today said I need to change my timing belt. C5 136bhp 05 hdi Either 120 months or 130,000. The car is 56 and done 105,000 miles. Obviously 10 years came first. I asked if ai could go to france with the existing belt next month and theybwere totally non commital. Could I chance it or am I taking a risk?

It will either make the journey, or it won't. However, 56 reg is from September 2006 to February 2007, so 10 years has not yet happened.

It is generally recommended to change them after eight years or 90,00 miles.
Could soldier on for ages yet.

I'm of the opinion that miles is more detrimental to a cambelt than age. I changed both our Saxo's and Pug 306's belts for the first time when they were 12 years old (but both low mileage). The removed belts looked like new with no cracking when flexed inside out. On the other hand, I became quite anxious about my Mk2 C5 after it reached 85000 miles. That's when it was changed.

Just seen one from a 20 year old Xantia V6 that had done 44000 miles... Original belt and it looked perfect... Looked OK but who knows.. For peace of mind always change it in good time...

Boris, on the plus side the belt in yours is an easy one to change... Just remember never to turn the engine backwards ;)

I wouldnt know whwere to start. They quoted just under £500, 490 ish which included changing water pump as is usual. Just that I will have spent over 1000 on this thing over the last three months if I I did have the work done. Would like to spread if out but if i must, I must.
