Esp/asr system faulty on C5

Post by atr »

Hi
On the display of my C5 I'm getting the message: "esp/asr system faulty" and the transmission selector is locked for about a minute and the triangle icon on the left gauge is lit. after about a minute the locking is released and I can shift the selector to "D" or "R".
could you please provide me a clue what is the cause and the (possible) remedy for it?
Thanx.

My initial thoughts are the brake switch is faulty. Best thing to do though is get it on a Lexia to confirm any faults.

Here's a list of members with Lexias willing to help:

Oops, apologies! Mind you there are a few members from Israel on the forum, maybe a good time to see which of you have Lexias within reasonable travel distance. :)

Hi and thanks for your replies. I've ordered a Lexia and I hope to receive it in about 2-3 weeks. I suspect that the problem exists for some time since I've noticed it a few days ago and then it disappeared and today it reappeared. I would like to ask, according to your knowledge, if there is no risk to drive the vehicle this way for a couple of weeks? would you know where is that brake switch located?

That's why it's important to get it on the Lexia first. You need to be sure that it isn't another component causing the problem. If the break switch is faulty it will likely affect the Cruise control and speed limited functions too. As you have an Auto, you need to have your foot on the brake before selecting another gear setting (at standstill), so this could indicate a fault with the brake switch.

If you send me a Private message with your VIN, and an email address (don't post your email here) I can get you the part numbers and a diagram for the switch location. But get your Lexia installed first before ordering parts in case it is another related problem.

If the ABS ASR warning message is on then the ESP and ABS systems are disabled. Be aware of this, you will have full braking but these safety systems will not be operative until the fault is fixed.

Hi
It took my a while, but last week I've purchase and replaced (thanks again to Marc for his help) the break switch and "voila" the problem solved. I wonder, however, why - because I've checked the old switch with an ohmmeter and it seemed ok since the normally open and the normally closed contacts responded by opening and closing. the fact is that regardless to my test, replacing the switch solved the problem.

One of the finer mysteries of modern electronics I think - but I suspect it may of been an internal component of the unit that might be at fault - but at least it's sorted.

Possibly the act of removing the plug sorted out an intermittent contact fault somewhere nearby.

Or - removing the plug has temporarily fixed a faulty joint and it's just biding its time waiting to go wrong again!

Hope it's the first.

Quite possibly, mind you it's no wonder we're in a throw away society these days, there's just no way to take some of these sealed units apart to inspect the electronic circuits without the risk of further damage - dry solder joints and the circuit itself are hard to test and repair for the casual mechanic! :-D

Give me.

Ah ha, is this the problem I to have and wrote about a while ago.

Brake switch, where is it, would like to try and take it out and stare/shout/clean it to see "IF" the problem clears.

AS has been written, I to have a 2.0 d auto and when the bongs start the cc goes, very annoying on a long motorway journey.

Cheers Marc

VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

It usually happens if after starting I place foot on brake, (auto) and try and select reverse, (out of the garage) OR slam on the anchors sometimes. And of course abs goes as does CC

So do you think If I took it out, gave it a filthy look, (cleaned it) and replaced it the "fault" I have might go or should I just get a new one.
