Replacing rear crank oil seal on XUD.

Post by Ianhw77k »

Are there any tips for getting this oil seal back in without messing it up?
At 110mm diameter, I haven't got any sockets that big to press it in with. I can't afford to mess this up, engine is in situ and gearbox is sitting in the wheel arch, so there's a bit of room in there.

Thanks in advance.

I did do this job on a BX TD but forgotten the detail, it's so long ago.

Have a good look at the position of the old oil seal in it's housing, before you remove it (ie. is it flush or a little into the casing).

I suspect I just gently drifted the new seal into place with a short length of something like 1/2" square wooden batten. What you don't want is a drift that indents and maybe damages the new oil seal as you drive it in. You need to tap the seal at opposite points around the circumference, so it doesn't get skew as it goes in.

coat the lips of the seal lightly with grease or oil, they go in quite easily.

Right O, basically be careful and put a bit of grease on it.
I think I'll use a bit of wood and the old seal to help me along and keep a good eye on it as I'm progressing.
I took the old one out the other day, it was sitting in by about 1mm.

Cheers guys.
