Update: Autoglass are now ordering a new Sensor and should be in by 3rd or 4th June! Just as well we still have some manual control remaining over these things like the wipers, otherwise would be snookered with all this rain!
No quibbling, so I'm still pleased I went with them.

Update: After nearly 2 months from originally coming to change the windscreen, I now have my new Rain/Light Sensor fitted!

It took 4 weeks to get it ordered to turning up to fit it. I did have kittens when he whipped out a metal screwdriver to start taking the shroud and sensor trim off, at which point I told him to stop while I got a proper trim removal tool made of plastic from the shed!

He then started touching the sensor with his fingers and I had to tell him to stop as it could affect the adhesion... crikey talk about babysitting the procedure!

Finally, when it was plugged back in, I could show him how it was supposed to work, adjusting the speed to the amount of water on the screen. I'm a happy chappy now, but you really have to watch them like a hawk. They may be great window fitters, but I don't put much in their training on associated electronics or common sense!

the gel pad is actually sealed in parts around the edges of the sensor unit, bet they wished they hadnt gotten that job, likely loosing money

The replacement was a complete sensor with the gel pad in place and intact that went straight on. I think over time with the sunlight and temperature changes, once removed from the screen, re-use is not really an option. There are liquid kits you can buy that you mix and pour onto the sensor, let set and then reattach, but I couldn't seem to find one for this at the time - so was easier to get the sensor replaced - they claimed on their own insurance that covers them for this sort of thing.

thanks, i was directed here from viewtopic.php?f=3&t=57350&p=525435#p525435 looking for a photo of one working to look for the IR glow that i anticipate a working one would show, and mine doesnt. i have an adaptation error. its likely i have same problem as you , though i would still expect to see ir glow, unless it tries at boot, fails and turns off... anyway the gel pad has a black mask on the back of it to block light in certain parts, so im unsure a generic pad could replace this, plus there is a gell between it and the sensor and maybe the windscreen too.

As far as I am aware and from the one I looked at on the X7, they form these from liquid and set them ready to be installed with the sensor, similar to these kits for creating a new one:
http://eshop.pma-tools.de/Fahrzeuge/CITROEN/C5-08/2/
In the procedures, when removing the sensor (which should not be systematically replaced) they suggest protecting the gel pad by covering it with transparent adhesive tape. There must be no contaminants on the pad or glass such as finger prints which contain chemicals, or anything else, or it won't bond back.
