Squeaky xantia

Post by chinkostu »

i'm slowly going through the list of little irritants that need sorting on the Xantia. locks have been greased and quietened down and the boot light finally works.

there is one thing i can't pinpoint though. when i drive over a bump off-square (for example on a speedbump 2 wheeled) theres a loud high pitched squeak from the rear. you can hear it with the windows open and closed, but definately sounds outside of the car as it seems to be slighty louder with the window open. rear arms move freely, spheres are "ok" and recent new pads. it passed an MOT perfectly with the squeak last year before i even changed the pads :?

spare wheel carrier is as tight as it can be too

Have you jacked it up and actually tested the rear arms for movement? The bearings fail because water get sin and and washes out the grease and rusts the bearings, I think you will probably find that's what it is unless they have been replaced recently.

Did you try removing the spare wheel and spare wheel carrier completely and going for a test drive ? Do you still hear the squeak ?

The carrier can be removed with one bolt, assuming it has not rusted too badly!

If the tyre size is a bad match for the carrier it may squeak no matter how tight the carrier is so I would start by confirming the noise is still there with it removed...

It also gives much better access to other potential noise sources in the area so I would leave it out while looking for the noise, just remember to put your spare wheel in the boot... ;)

Another thing to check is the rubber snubbers on the rear suspension arms - are they perished ?
